Universitäten sind in den letzten Jahren ins Zentrum des öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Interesses gerückt. Dieser Band bringt neue Perspektiven ein - indem er die Protagonisten selbst sprechen lässt: Sie thematisieren die Universität einerseits als Ort der Krise, Fremdbestimmung, Desintegration, sozialer Spannungen und Exklusion. Soziale Grenzziehungen und Ungleichheitsrelationen prägen die persönliche Navigation im universitären Raum nachhaltig. Andererseits erscheint die Universität als Raum der Selbsterfahrung, Identifikation, Inklusion und Zugehörigkeit. Die Autor_innen dokumentieren eindrucksvoll, wie sich an Universitäten verschiedene Wege und Möglichkeiten kreuzen, und machen Phänomene sichtbar, die in der Debatte um das hochschulpolitische »große Ganze« untergehen.

This text examines how ethnic activism in Nepal developed a political language that stressed local particularities and engaged in politics of difference while seeking to address audiences across the globe. It is argued that a language of ethnicity evolved in a series of translation acts. Looking back at long histories of oppression and marginalisation, members of ethnic groups - in Nepal as elsewhere - seek to reassert themselves by engaging in public representations and by creating a common ground in the framework of global ethnic activism and hence global normative horizons. While moving between local, national and global audiences, ethnic activists transport and mould meanings, creating a common denominator for a semantic field that is intelligible to the widest possible diverse audience. Translation is viewed here as a complex exercise: moving back and forth between local, national and global forums of communication and engagement while adopting, rejecting and shaping the means of expression and the related knowledge repertoires. These acts can engage with and react to meanings created within fields of power seen as oppressive or enabling. By deploying a wide-ranging repertoire of narrative figures, such political communication aims at capturing, channelling and expanding public attention.

While most Asian students still opt for Western universities when envisioning international destinations, growing numbers turn to Asian countries and their universities. This new development has received increasing attention among practitioners and policy makers, while social science research only recently turned to Asia-to-Asia students' international flows. This contribution offers, first, a literature review, reflecting on trends and the magnitude of inter-Asian students' movements. These movements are seen as multiple and complex mobilities, not only in spatial but also in the social and ideational sense. Student strategies in making choices while moving to foreign Asian universities as well as their pathways within the social spaces of universities—paying attention to the multiscalar dimensions of movements and the assemblages they recreate—constitute the second part of the article. The third and main part discusses what we learn about the changing shape of Asia while following students' pathways and aspirations. These movements shape Asia's academic space that is embedded in the shifting dimensions of Asian economies, polities, social negotiations, cultures, and values.

This text develops a theory of belonging critically building upon identity-research - while doing more justice to the dynamic nature of social constellations and to the multipositionality of social actors. The concept of 'belonging' is introduced as a combination of commonality, mutuality, and attachments. A vital opposition is made between the collective constellations of belonging and the individual navigations through multiple collective assemblages during the life course. It is argued that these navigations entail tackling manifold forms of boundary dynamics as collective belonging creates regimes that guard collectivities against the outsiders and also against the members' attempts to abandon 'their' collectivities. The analysis draws upon ethnicity research, immigration research and globalisation research, i.e. in fields where issues of belonging are as vital as they are challenged, and therefore, they are often politicized. Rather than taking a specific collective belonging for granted, e.g. ethnic, religious or national, this contribution addresses the situated nature of individual positionings, the possibility of combining different dimensions of belonging, and the necessity to belong together in contemporary societies.

Wenn Frauenrechtsaktivistinnen weltweit auf Marginalisierung, Ungleichheit und Ungerechtigkeit hinweisen, müssen sie meistens auf die Sprache des Rechts zurückgreifen. Der Menschenrechtsdiskurs stellt daher ein globaler Bezugshorizont dar, welcher sich jedoch aus spezifischen kulturellen Positionen und lokalen Sichtweisen zusammensetzt. Die Autorin erläutert dies anhand verschiedener Formen kultureller Positionierungen in asiatischen Frauennetzwerken, die sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen scheinbar unvereinbaren Wertvorstellungen bewegen: Positionen des feministischen Islams, die gegenüber der patriarchalen Haltung innerhalb der islamischen Glaubensgemeinschaft eingenommen werden; zivilgesellschaftliche Positionen gegenüber offiziellen, aber bestimmte Gruppen benachteiligenden staatlichen Sanktionen sowie intellektuelle Positionen, die sich gegenüber verschiedenen Ausdrucksweisen, westlicher Dominanz platzieren. Die Globalität des Menschenrechtsdiskurses wird nach der These der Autorin nicht nur durch gemeinsame Interessen und Anliegen, sondern vor allem durch lokale Aneignungen und kontroverse Standpunkte hergestellt, wobei die Prozesse der Transkulturalität eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Indem Menschenrechte und einheimische kulturelle Ordnungen nicht als Alternativen aufgefasst werden, gewährleistet eine solche, durch transkulturelle Dynamiken geprägte Globalität, dass die weltweite Diffusion der Menschenrechte nicht zu einer kulturellen Nivellierung führt. Résumé En observant certaines prescriptions rituelles, les membres des minorités religieuses attirent l'attention dans leur « pays d'accueil ». En Europe, souvent confrontés à de l'incompréhension, de la méfiance ou de la curiosité, beaucoup de non-chrétiens cherchent comment obtenir une liberté d'expression religieuse. De plus en plus, les minorités religieuses font appel aux tribunaux pour réclamer des droits spéciaux. À partir d'exemples zurichois relatifs à la dispense de cours de natation et à la réalisation d'enterrements dignes, l'article questionne les changements sociaux qui résultent de l'immigration d'individus non chrétiens. Le droit à la liberté d'expression religieuse exige une flexibilité partagée tant par les institutions de la société de résidence que par les immigrés.

Der Beitrag befasst sich mit den ethnischen Minderheiten im nepalischen Staatsgefüge und der historischen Herausbildung der nationalen Kastenhierarchie. Vier Themenbereiche sind in diesem Zusammenhang von besonderem Interesse. Erstens ist zu fragen, in welchen Situationen gesellschaftlicher Umwälzungen - etwa in welchen Phasen ethnischer Mobilisierung - die Bereitschaft steigt, die Symbole der sozialen Distanz und Unterdrückung einer kritischen Betrachtung zu unterziehen, um auf den Inhalt ihrer an die Öffentlichkeit getragenen Botschaften Einfluss zu nehmen. Zweitens ist von Interesse, welche Symbole besonders anfällig für Anfechtungen sind. Diese lassen sich drittens mit Vorteil vor dem Hintergrund einer Analyse der kulturellen Repertoires betrachten, der sich die Mitglieder einer nationalen Gesellschaft bedienen. Schließlich ist zu untersuchen, welche Bedeutung den kulturellen Kontakten zwischen öffentlichen Sphären auf verschiedenen Ebenen - lokal, national, global - in diesen Prozessen zukommt. (ICH)
