In this paper we study the diffusion of non-hydro renewable energy (NHRE) technologies for electricity generation across 108 developing countries between 1980 and 2010. We use two-stage estimation methods to identify the determinants behind the choice of whether or not to adopt NHRE as well as about the amount of electricity to produce from renewable energy sources. We find that NHRE diffusion accelerates with the implementation of economic and regulatory instruments, higher per capita income and schooling levels, and stable, democratic regimes. In contrast, increasing openness and aid, institutional and strategic policy support programs, growth of electricity consumption, and high fossil fuel production appear to delay NHRE diffusion. Furthermore, we find that a diverse energy mix increases the probability of NHRE adoption. Finally, we find weak support for a positive influence of the Kyoto Protocol on NHRE diffusion and no evidence for any influence resulting from financial sector development. -- renewable energy technologies ; developing countries ; electricity ; technology diffusion ; sample selection

With its "Compact with Africa", the German G20 Presidency intends to encourage private institutional and corporate investment, together with the African partners. The objective is to boost growth and jobs, promote inclusion and give people economic perspectives at home so that they do not have to leave their home country to seek subsistence elsewhere. Stimulating private sustainable investment in Africa has been a longstanding G20 policy target. Total assets managed by long-term institutional investors are projected to reach $100 trillion by 2020, up from $62 trillion just eight years earlier. To fill Africa's annual infrastructure funding gap of $50 billion, one percent of new institutional investment by pension funds, life insurance companies and sovereign wealth funds would need to be invested in Africa's infrastructure every year. Yet, despite the longstanding policy focus of G7/20 leaders, private long-term investment in Africa's infrastructure has remained deficient. Private finance still plays a minority role in funding Africa's infrastructure. Regulatory supply-side barriers for investors and low-income Africa host barriers are identified as root causes. To help improve the situation, appropriate dialogue partners not envisaged so far are identified, especially prudential regulators. As for low-income Africa, the paper recommends realism: Most African countries are at the first two steps of the Infrastructure Funding Escalator, where public investment and concessionary aid remain the major funding sources. FDI inflows produce important effects which go beyond spillovers to domestic firms. But while some middle-income African countries have managed to enter global value chains, it is shown that the transfers of technology and spillover effects are still limited, especially in low-income Africa; a systematic trend can hardly be identified. In order to drive structural transformation in Africa, some policy prerequisites are seen as key: apart from political and macroeconomic stability, improved transport systems and energy access to generate agglomeration benefits and industrial clusters. Regional economic integration is essential for Africa to realize its full growth potential. The paper suggests crucial elements of a favourable investment climate (such as access to finance and imported inputs, enforcement of contracts, reliable regulatory standards, improved infra¬structure) for local firms and foreign investors, to raise the potential of upgrading in global value chains through tax incentives and local content requirements, and the formation of industrial clusters.

Despite ample anecdotal evidence, previous research on violent conflict has found little evidence that religion is an important factor in organized violence. Quantitative work in this area has been largely confined to the interreligious character of conflict and measures of religious diversity, and has strongly neglected the peace aspect of religion. The Religion and Conflict in Developing Countries (RCDC) dataset helps to fill this gap with innovative and fine-grained data for 130 developing countries between 1990 and 2010. RCDC includes four types of religious violence (assaults on religious targets, attacks by religious actors, clashes between religious communities, and clashes with the state). In addition, RCDC contains data on interreligious networks and peace initiatives. This article demonstrates the usefulness of RCDC by applying our data to a preliminary analysis. The results indicate that interreligious networks are a reaction to identity overlaps and previous interreligious conflict. (International Interactions (London)/ FUB)

Anecdotal evidence from many armed conflicts suggests that religion incites violence. Theoretically speaking, several facets of religion can create motives and opportunities to overcome the collective action problems associated with organized violence. However, empirical research has hitherto found no conclusive answer on the extent to which religion is connected to armed conflict onset. Contributing to the filling of this gap, we use a new database that incorporates important religious factors that previous studies left largely untested. The data set covers 130 developing countries for the period 1990 to 2010. Results from logistic regressions confirm our expectation that certain religious factors fuel armed conflict—in particular, the overlap of religious and other identities, religious groups' grievances, and religious leaders' calls for violence. We also find that religious determinants vary in their impact according to whether conflicts are religious or not in origin.

Die Ausbreitung globaler Wertschöpfungsketten ist ein wesentliches Charakteristikum des Handels im 21. Jahrhundert. Die Herstellung eines Produkts und seiner einzelnen Komponenten erfolgt immer häufiger in verschiedenen Ländern und Regionen – und daran beteiligt sind zunehmend Unternehmen aus Entwicklungsländern. Aber bringt diese Beteiligung immer Vorteile?

Diese Frage ist wieder hoch aktuell. Vom 7. bis 9. Dezember 2015 wird das Committee on Regional Cooperation and Integration (CRCI), gegründet durch die Ministerkonferenz der Economic Commission for Africa, in Addis Abeba darüber diskutieren, wie die Integration von afrikanischen Ländern unter anderem durch die Bildung regionaler und globaler Wertschöpfungsketten gefördert werden kann. Und bereits beim Zusammentreffen der Minister der Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) vom 16. bis 17. November 2015 in Manila wurde die Bedeutung globaler Wertschöpfungsketten zur Förderung eines nachhaltigen Wachstums der Asiatisch-Pazifischen Region herausgestellt.


Neben dem Handel mit Endprodukten ist zudem der Handel mit Vor- und Zwischenprodukten gewachsen. Globale Wertschöpfungsketten eröffnen neue Möglichkeiten für Entwicklungsländer, an der globalen Wirtschaft zu partizipieren und sowohl ökonomisch als auch sozial, zum Beispiel durch positive Beschäftigungseffekte, aufzusteigen. Die meisten Entwicklungsländer sind jedoch häufig mit Produktionsaktivitäten mit relativ geringer Wertschöpfung beteiligt. Regionale Wertschöpfungsketten könnten die Leistungsfähigkeit dieser Länder erhöhen und die ökonomische Bandbreite im Hinblick auf die Produktivität, die Bildung von Kapazitäten und Skalenerträgen erweitern. Um sich erfolgreich in regionalen und globalen Wertschöpfungsketten zu etablieren, bedarf es mehr als nur stabiler ökonomischer und politischer Rahmenbedingungen. Neben einer guten Infrastruktur, ausgebildeten Arbeitskräften, Forschungs- und Entwicklungsanstrengungen ist ein Anreizsystem zur Förderung der Integration in Wertschöpfungsketten erforderlich.
