"Syria-Palestine in the Late Bronze Age presents an explicitly anthropological perspective on politics and social relationships. Abstract: Can the politics of the Canaanite kings in their small urban centers, as reflected in the Amarna letters (mid-fourteenth cent. BCE), be called to some extent tribal? Beyond the (now old) anthropological discussion about "what is a tribe?," can we see tribalism as a main factor in the Southern Levant's politics? If we attend to the political scene of the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550–1200 BCE), many of the activities of the local socio-political actors—even those settled and with an urban political life—do indeed match the rationale and expectations found in tribal situations and relationships, as documented in the modern ethnographic record of the Middle East: alliances and coalitions, personal subordination, political reciprocity, etc. The key matter in this interpretation is to transcend monolithic models like "tribe" or "city-state" and focus instead on the nature of the evidenced political practice, namely what the main actors do and how they behave to gain influence and prestige and to exert power and control over other political actors. In that way, there would be no need for expecting a mandatory presence of proper tribes in order to find tribal politics in action. This paper assesses the data in the Amarna archive from this perspective, noting the relevance of kinship, patrimonial structures and patron-client relationships in order to understand how local political communities were related to and interacted with the great powers of the period (particularly Egypt) which intervened in the land. ; Resumen: ¿Puede la actividad política de los reyes cananeos en sus pequeños centros urbanos, como se refleja en las cartas de El Amarna (siglo XIV a.n.e.), ser llamada en cierta medida tribal? Más allá de la (ahora vieja) discusión antropológica sobre "qué es una tribu", ¿podemos percibir al tribalismo como un factor clave en la política del Levante meridional? Centrándonos en la escena política regional de la Edad del Bronce Tardío (ca. 1550–1200 a.n.e.), es posible afirmar que muchas de las actividades de los actores sociopolíticos locales—inclusive aquellos ubicados en ámbitos urbanos—en efecto coinciden con las lógicas y las expectativas halladas en situaciones tribales, tal como se documenta el registro etnográfico de Medio Oriente: alianzas y coaliciones, subordinación personal, reciprocidad política, etc. La cuestión de importancia en esta interpretación es lograr trascender los modelos monolíticos como "tribu" o "ciudad-Estado" y, en cambio, focalizar el análisis en la naturaleza de la práctica política evidenciada, vale decir, lo que los actores principales hacen y cómo se comportan para obtener influencia y prestigio y, también, para ganar poder y control sobre otros actores políticos. En dicho sentido, no habría razón de esperar una presencia necesaria de tribus para hallar también una política tribal en acción. Este trabajo aborda la información disponible en el archivo de El Amarna desde esta perspectiva, subrayando la relevancia del parentesco, las estructuras patrimoniales y las relaciones patrón-cliente para comprender la manera en que las comunidades políticas locales interactuaban con los grandes poderes del período (en especial, Egipto) que intervenían en la región.
Entre 1300 y 900 a.n.e., las regiones de Siria y de Palestina experimentaron una serie de disrupciones y reacomodamientos, especialmente en la escena política. Más aún, la opinión historiográfica tradicionalmente aceptada indica que un cambio radical en las estructuras sociopolíticas ocurrió, marcando una transición de organizaciones políticas territoriales a organizaciones "nacionales" o étnicas. La discusión presentada en este trabajo apunta a revisar dicha opinión y a observar una permanencia fundamental, luego de la crisis del siglo XII, de las estructuras jerárquicas basadas en el parentesco y el patronazgo; estructuras sociopolíticas que proporcionaban las pautas básicas en la dinámica interna y externa de los reinos locales. Finalmente, se presenta una hipótesis al respecto de la relevancia de la adscripción y la subordinación políticas en la creación de identidades étnicas en el Levante durante la Edad del Hierro. ; Between 1300 and 900 BCE the regions of Syria and Palestine experienced a series of disruptions and rearrangements, especially in the political scene. Further, the traditionally accepted historiographical view indicates that a radical change in socio-political structures occurred, marking a transition from territorial polities to "national" or ethnic polities. The discussion offered in this paper aims at challenging such a view and observing the fundamental permanence, after the twelfth century crisis, of hierarchical structures based on kinship and patronage; socio-political structures which informed the basic internal and external dynamics of the local kingdoms. Lastly, it is presented a hypothesis concerning the relevance of political attachment and subordination for the creation of ethnic identities in the Iron Age Levant.

Este artículo explora de manera crítica la influencia que el mensaje teológico hallado en pasajes de los libros bíblicos de Génesis a Josué, los cuales expresan limpieza étnica, violencia y desposesión territorial, ha tenido como trasfondo simbólico de la colonización judía de Palestina a partir de fines del siglo XIX por parte del movimiento sionista y, posteriormente durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX, por parte del Estado de Israel y otros actores nacionalistas y religiosos. Un análisis de estos procesos permite también realizar una evaluación acerca de los diversos modos de evocar el pasado, de acuerdo con el contexto de tales evocaciones y con los agentes que realizan las evocaciones, además de poner de manifiesto las consecuencias morales de un uso politizado del pasado. ; This paper critically explores the influence that certain passages in the Biblical books from Genesis to Joshua, which express ethnic cleansing, violence and territorial dispossession, have exerted as the symbolic background of the Jewish colonization of Palestine, from the end of the nineteenth century onwards, by the Zionist movement and, later in the second half of the twentieth century, by the State of Israel and other inationalist and religious agents. Abstract: During most of the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550–1200 BCE) Syria-Palestine was occupied and ruled by foreign powers: Egypt in its southern part, Ḫatti and Mitanni in its northern part. In such a situation, in which the foreign political hegemony marked the pace of inner socio-political dynamics, it would be possible to ask whether there were actual instances of political resistance and maneuvering "from below" in the petty kingdoms of the Levant. Politics from below can in fact be detected in the textualepigraphic data from the period. This paper offers an analysis of these local political dynamics faced to foreign rule, also sketching a basic political anthropology of the region. ; Resumen: La región de Siria-Palestina durante la Edad del Bronce Tardío (ca. 1550–1200 a.C.) estuvo mayormente ocupada y dominada por poderes extranjeros: Egipto en la zona meridional, Ḫatti y brevemente Mitanni en la zona septentrional de dicha región. Ante tal situación, en la que la hegemonía política desde el exterior marcaba las pautas y las dinámicas sociopolíticas generales, cabe preguntarse si existían instancias de réplicas y/o resistencias y de maniobrabilidad políticas "desde abajo", desde los pequeños reyes y líderes locales. Dicha actitud, en efecto, puede ser evidenciada en parte del material documental proveniente de este período. En la presente comunicación, exponemos dicho material documental y efectuamos un análisis del mismo, tendiendo a ofrecer una síntesis de la antropología política local, a partir de la interacción entre dominantes externos y dominados locales.
La perspectiva antropológica de investigación social no se encuentra enmarcada solamente en la labor etnográfica de campo, sino que se constituye, antes bien, a partir de una particular disposición epistemológica anterior que conduce el análisis de dicha mirada y que puede aplicarse a toda la actividad y producción humanas. A partir de este enunciado, en el presente trabajo escrutamos las representaciones sociales y de valores del film norteamericano de animación 300. Un análisis crítico del film permite ubicarlo dentro de los parámetros del discurso orientalista, tal como éste fuera enunciado por Edward Said, y también, ahora en el ámbito de las representaciones mentales, permite vincular las imágenes del film con la ocupación militar de Irak y Afganistán por parte de los Estados Unidos. ; The anthropological perspective of social research is not only attached to the realm of the ethnographic fieldwork. It is rather founded in a previous particular epistemological outlook, which leads such analytical research further and allows for an interpretation of any human activity and production. Building on this statement, in the present paper a critical view of the American animation film 300 and its social representations and ethics is offered. A sound analysis of the film shows its orientalist bias, in the specific manner argued by Edward Said; furthermore, and now on the realm of mental representations, it is possible to link the film's images to the US military occupation of Irak and Afghanistan. ; Fil: Pfoh, Emanuel. Las siguientes reflexiones apuntan a contextualizar analíticamente la recepción, tanto académica como popular, de la novela de ficción El Código Da Vinci, escrita por Dan Brown (2003). Desde una perspectiva académica, es posible apreciar dos tipos de reacciones a la obra: por un lado, una sencilla desconsideración general por parte de historiadores de las religiones y especialistas en la historia del cristianismo, y por otro lado, respuestas por parte de especialistas en teología y estudios bíblicos que confrontan el argumento de la novela, no en términos literarios sino históricos (confundiendo géneros literarios por razones teológicas). Desde una perspectiva de recepción popular, es posible vincular los argumentos del libro (un complot o una conspiración a través de los tiempos) con múltiples expresiones contemporáneas de espiritualidad y/o pensamiento religioso, las cuales se apartan de los principios de instituciones religiosas históricas tales como la iglesia católica y el protestantismo tradicional. Este último escenario puede ser contextualizado en el ámbito de las prácticas y los fenómenos religiosos en el actual mundo "secularizado".
Abstract: Recent scholarship has shown that there is no solid archaeological or epigraphic evidence to deem the narratives about the rise to kingship of David and his son Solomon as reflecting the rise and consolidation of Israel as a Nation-State during the 10th century BCE. It is rather during the 9th century in the Palestinian highlands that we can find the emergence of a socio-political entity named Bīt Humri/ya or Israel in the contemporary archaeological and epigraphic records, but with an ambiguous character as a state. In this paper, it is suggested the possibility that the rise of such a polity and the constitution of an ethnogenesis are notably and directly related to the appearance of the Arabian network of exchanges in the early first millennium BCE in the Near East. Furthermore, from a critical point of view, one may suggest that there is no direct ethnic connection between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah and the later Jewish cults of Yahweh in Palestine. ; Resumen: Recientes estudios han demostrado que la historicidad de las narrativas del acceso al trono de David y de su hijo Salomón, como reflejo fidedigno del surgimiento y consolidación de Israel como un Estado-Nación hacia el siglo X a.C., no puede ser confirmada en el registro arqueológico o en el epigráfico. Así pues, es realmente durante el siglo IX a.C. en las tierras altas de Palestina que podemos detectar el surgimiento de una entidad sociopolítica mayor conocida como Bīt Humri/ya o Israel, de acuerdo con los registros arqueológico y epigráfico contemporáneos, pero de un carácter estatal ciertamente ambiguo. En este artículo sostenemos la posibilidad de que la aparición de esta entidad así como la constitución de una etnogénesis estén relacionadas, de manera notable y directa, con la aparición del comercio árabe en el Cercano Oriente a principios del primer milenio a.C. Más aún, desde un punto de vista crítico, se puede postular que no existe una conexión directa, en términos de etnicidad, entre los reinos de Israel y Judá de la Edad del Hierro y los posteriores cultos judíos a Yahweh en la Palestina helenístico-romana.
AbstractFollowing the discussion presented in an article by R. Westbrook on patronage in the ancient Near East (JESHO 48/2, 2005), the aim of this paper is to continue with the discussion as well as to address some of the views on the topic regarding Syria-Palestine during the Late Bronze Age, using examples from the Amarna letters and Hittite treaties. Some of the critical questions that should be addressed in further discussions on the subject are related to the socio-political nature of patronage and its relationship to kinship ties in society, and why and how patronage relationships are established in society. Après l'étude du R. Westbrook sur l'évidence du patronage dans le Proche-Orient ancien, publié dans ce journal (JESHO 48/2, 2005), on veut continuer avec la discussion du thème mais donner aussi quelques révisions pour la Syrie-Palestine du l'âge du Bronce Récent à partir de exemples dans les lettres d'Amarna et les traités hittites. Questions fondamentales qu'on doit traiter sont: la nature socio-politique du patronage et son rapport avec la parenté dans la société; et pourquoi et comment les liens de patronage sont établis dans la société.
