Reviewed are the interactive effects of source credibility & such other variables that affect the communication process as the attitudinal persistence of the credibility effect, the timing of the source's identification, message factors, & individual audience differences. The extent to which these data are ordered by cognitive response & attribution theories is examined. Situations where a credible source facilitates, inhibits, & has no systematic persuasive effect are identified. The explanatory power of cognitive response & attribution theory is demonstrated & these theories provide complementary explanations about how the persuasive mass communication process works. A common language linking these theoretical formulations is advanced which provides a framework for investigating this process. Modified HA.
