The Fall of an Empire, the Birth of a Nation: Perceptions of the New Russian National Identity
Assesses whether ethnic nationalism or civic nationalism has become the carrying idea in the new Russian national self-understanding since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Research data from interviews with 30 schoolteachers (6 male, 24 female) in St. Petersburg provide the basis for an analysis of contemporary Russian national identity as reflected in everyday life. Subjects characterized the Russian people as spiritual, generous, proud, & somewhat disorganized. They expressed tolerance toward immigrants, frustration at the present condition of their country, & opposition to nationalism. The Greimasian actant model is used to illustrate the shift from Soviet to post-Soviet identity. The author concludes that cultural nationalism is the dominant sentiment at present. 3 Figures, 8 References. J. R. Callahan

Contributions reflect three main themes: (1) the history of Russian identity formation & ideology, (2) nationality policy & politics, & (3) the dichotomous nature of national identity in modern Russia.
