The archaeomagnetic studies carried out at the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPE RAS) provided an important contribution to the international studies of the main magnetic field of the Earth for the past few thousand years. Extensive data on the intensity of geomagnetic field in the past 8000 years were obtained. Four most representative and long time series of the data have been constructed for Eurasia for the Iberian Peninsula, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Siberia. Unique studies having no analogues in international research have been carried out into rapid variations in the geomagnetic field intensity with characteristic times starting from several tens of years. Based on the analysis of the international data on the ancient geomagnetic field, the spectrum of the variations in the geomagnetic field intensity with the periods ranging from decades to millennia was established and the characteristics ofthe variations whose superposition can describe the pattern of the changes of the geomagnetic field intensity were determined. It was found out that variations with different characteristic times have a differently directed drift, and the "main oscillation" with a characteristic time of 8000 years has an eastern drift.

Astract—The paper reports petromagnetic and archeomagnetic studies of ceramic fragments of the Late Bronze and Early Iron ages from archeological sites of the Grishinskii Istok III, Tyukov hillfort, and Shishkino hillfort, which are located in the Oka River basin, Ryazan district, Russian Federation. In total, 43 determinations of geomagnetic field intensity were obtained for the time interval of 1500–400 B.C., including 10 determinations for ceramics of the Grishinskii Istok III, 11 determinations for ceramics of the Tyukov hillfort, and 22 determinations for ceramics of the Shishkino hillfort. The studied time interval is characterized by the elevated values of the geomagnetic field intensity of 55–59 μT, which are much higher than the average field intensity for the Russian Plain in the IV–first half of III millennium B.C. Obtained VADM values for central Russian Plain fall in a wide range of values obtained on the Georgian archeological sites located in the same longitudinal sector. A large scatter of data can be related both to the large error in 14C determination, which is comparable with the duration of the best studied time interval, and with the high rate of magnetic field variations within this time interval.

With the goal to correlate the magnetostratigraphic data of the Eastern Paratethys obtained by researchers in different years a rockmagnetic and paleomagnetic investigations of the Tarkhanian sediments of the Skelya section was carried out. The main carrier of the natural remanent magnetization is titanomagnetite in the Argunian beds of the Tarkhanian regional stage; in addition to titanomagnetite there is iron sulfide (monoclinic pyrrhotite and/or greigite) in the deposits of the Terskian and Kuvinian beds. The paleomagnetic fold test of natural remanent magnetization directions, recorded in the rocks of the Argunian beds, is positive, which indicates a pre-folding age of the magnetization formation. A comparison with the magnetochronological scale GTS 2020 shows that the normal polarity interval in the lower part of the Argunian beds can presumably be compared with the С5Bn chron. The reversal polarity interval in the upper part of the Argunian beds is with C5ADr. The age of the С5Bn/C5ADr boundary can be estimated as ~14.7 Ma.
