A discussion of the expanding range of behavior labeled "violent" by contemporary social critics. By differentiating between the descriptive & polemic or persuasive functions of language, it is demonstrated that as the domain of the term "violence" increases, its informative content decreases. Further, it is argued that both the scientific study of violence & social attempts to address the problem of violence are hindered rather than helped by this increased extension of the term. The unnecessary & unfruitful equation of immorality with harm, coupled with a desire for simplicity, have been contributing factors in this development. It is concluded that this process of neological extension has at best only clouded issues for those interested in reducing the amount of violence in the world. AA
