Addition of fluoride to municipal water supplies is an effective means of reducing dental cavities in children. Since the early 1950's many US communities have undertaken fluoridation of their water supply. Other communities have decided not to take this step. The history of the fluoridation controversy in Cambridge, Mass is briefly summarized. The vote on the referendum in which fluoridation was rejected is analyzed in some detail. Support of fluoridation is highly correlated with: (1) support of the proportional representation form of voting (on the ballot at the same time), (2) support of candidates endorsed by the local pol'al reform group, (3) support of liberal NewDeal Fair-Deal Democrats rather than conservative Democratic ones. Precincts which supported a `liberal' position on various issues tended also to support fluoridation. 'Pro-fluoridation' precincts are located in the wealthier & Mc parts of the city. IPSA.
