Normative concerns are central to the study of democratic theory & the policy-relevant areas of political science & economics. The same normative concerns are central to the study of axiomatic social choice theory. Despite similarities in origin & in underlying philosophical orientations, the fields have evolved separately & within different methodologies. A survey of the most major results in axiomatic social choice theory shows that it is possible to use axiomatic methods or process models, rather than the processes themselves, which are developed as a set of axioms to compare & identify similarities in actual democratic processes. This allows examination of the processes themselves to determine the aspects which make them acceptable or unacceptable. 3 Tables, 4 Figures. Modified HA.
