Among all sports, football is the one that saw the largest diffusion during the 20th century. Professional leagues exist on all continents and professional footballers are constantly on the move, trying to reach the wealthiest European clubs. Using the football players' market as an example, this article highlights some key features of economic globalization: the new international division of labour, the ever increasing role played by intermediaries to bind the demand and supply of work on a transnational scale, and the setting up of spatially fragmented trade circuits. These processes form the basis for the creation of a global market of footballers in which clubs and championships play complementary roles and are more than ever functionally integrated beyond national borders.

Résumé Les dirigeants du football africain ont abandonné les politiques protectionnistes pour bâtir des sélections nationales performantes. Ils s'orientent vers des stratégies libérales qui favorisent le départ de joueurs à l'étranger et leur rapatriement pour les matches de l'équipe nationale. De plus en plus systématiquement, les footballeurs d'origine africaine ayant grandi en Europe sont « récupérés ». Si le recours à la « diaspora » permet de compenser le gâchis de talents résultant de la faiblesse de la formation locale de footballeurs, cette pratique empêche le football national de se structurer.

Zwar sind die zugrundeliegenden Profit- und Geschäftsinteressen von Bedeutung, stärkere Auswirkungen hat dieses Phänomen jedoch auf kultureller Ebene. Als populäre Idole, Botschafter und Mittler sind afrikanische Fußballspieler unterschiedlichen Rollenerwartungen ausgesetzt, die sie oft nur schwer erfüllen können. Nur einer ganz kleinen Minderheit der zahlreichen jungen Bewerber, die zum Fußballspielen ins Ausland gehen, gelingt eine erfolgreiche Karriere. Unter dem herrschenden Einfluss der medialen Überrepräsentanz des Fußballs träumen dennoch Millionen junger Afrikaner davon, über das Fußballspielen ihr Land verlassen zu können. Professional football clubs worldwide are recruiting an increasing number of African players. While the underlying vested interests for profit and business are important, it is on a cultural level that this phenomenon has its greatest impact. The African football player as a popular icon, ambassador and mediator, is invested with a triple role, which is often difficult for him to assume. Indeed, of the multitude of young candidates who exile themselves for football, only a handful of them manage to pursue a successful career. However, due to the prevailing context of media over-exposure of football, millions of young Africans dream of leaving their country by playing this sport. In many sub-Saharan African countries football is being increasingly considered as a seperate career path altogether. (Afr Spec/GIGA)
