Conectando generaciones : investigación y aprendizaje en educación en medios y estudios de audiencia ; Connecting generations : a research and learning approach for media education and audience studies
; Based on theoretical and methodological orientations from authors' previous research on media and generations, this article presents a research and learning process involving supervised field work conducted by graduate students from a Master Seminar on Media Studies at FCSH, New University of Lisbon. Acting as facilitators of focus groups composed of older participants, exploring intergenerational and intragenerational differences and similarities that emerge from different age cohorts, and critically reflecting on this experience on their individual essays, students were able to build a contextual knowledge of media uses among their grand-parents' and parents' generation in Portugal. The choice of focus groups as a tool for research and the topic of generations to be investigated within Media Studies proved to be very productive. The article argues on the potentialities of this intergenerational relation between facilitator and focus groups' respondents as a way of activating the interactions inside the groups, leading –for instance– the participants to assume an «explaining» attitude in self-accounting. Final notes are presented about the educational gains of this methodology for Media Education and for different branches of Media Studies, such as media and social history, journalism and the news or political participation.

Adolescents of the 1960s and 1970s: An Italian-Portuguese comparison between two generations of audiences
This article explores how far the media technologies, contents and habits experienced in the years of youth contribute to the shaping of collective identities, which are shared by all the members of a generation. On the basis of two sets of empirical research developed in Italy and Portugal according to a life-story approach, it compares the self accounts and media memories of two generations of audiences living their youth in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970s. The relevance of national and international media systems as a part of the "structure of opportunity" that contributes to the forming of generational identities was identified as framed by other structural constraints on political, socioeconomic, educational and cultural levels. In each country, attitudes toward technological innovation and media domestication lived in their years of youth also affected the first contact of people belonging to these generations with ICTs and new media in the 1980s and 1990s.

Pluralismo mediático e inclusión social: la accesibilidad de la programación infantil y juvenil de RTP para menores con discapacidad ; Media pluralism and social inclusion: the accessibility of RTP children and youth programming for minors with disabilities
; This article investigates the accessibility of Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) children's and youth programming on linear and online television, both in its live broadcast and on-demand. The accessibility of content for minors is essential for the enjoyment of fundamental rights on an equal footing, to achieve the social inclusion of this group and as a reflection of media pluralism and the public service character of television. Furthermore, subtitling, audio description and sign language are also highly valuable learning tools for children and young people with visual or hearing disabilities. The study is based on a bibliographic and documentary analysis of the regulatory framework that dictates how accessible television programming should be in Portugal. Based on the legislation, it analyses its implementation in RTP children's and young people's programming through a content analysis; discusses the results through qualitative interviews with the RTP itself, the Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social (ERC) and the Federação Portuguesa das Associações de Surdos (FPAS); and contextualises the situation of accessibility of children's contents of RTP in the current international context by comparing it with public television channels in the United Kingdom and Spain. Conclusions suggest that the accessibility of RTP content aimed at children and young people is insufficient to guarantee their accessibility on an equal footing and must be improved, although highly positive initiatives can be seen in the implementation of the Língua Gestual Portuguesa (LGP).

Media literacy in Europe remains an unresolved. There are several recommendations from the Parliament and the Commission which urge to the states member to promote actions in order to incorporate this kind of literacy both in formal education and the rest of the society. Many countries are still suffering from effective measures in this regard. The article describes the Spanish and Portuguese case, where similarities can be observed in terms of actions promoted by the states, which mainly provides equipments to schools, and yet lacks a media literacy perspective.

In an open-ended survey question to European 9- to 16-year-olds, some 10,000 children reported a range of risks that concern them on the internet. Pornography (named by 22% of children who mentioned risks), conduct risk such as cyber-bullying (19%) and violent content (18%) were at the top of children's concerns. The priority given to violent content is noteworthy insofar as this receives less attention than sexual content or bullying in awareness-raising initiatives. Many children express shock and disgust on witnessing violent, aggressive or gory online content, especially that which graphically depicts realistic violence against vulnerable victims, including from the news. Video-sharing websites such as YouTube were primary sources of violent and pornographic content. The findings discussed in relation to children's fear responses to screen media and the implications for the public policy agenda on internet safety are identified.
Exploring European children's self-reported data on online aggression
In: Communications: the European journal of communication research, Band 46, Heft 3, S. 419-445
ISSN: 1613-4087
Abstract
To address the topic of children's online aggression, this article explores a subsample from the EU Kids Online dataset (2017–2019) of 1404 children, aged 9–16, who reported having engaged in aggressive acts online in the previous year. Through a cluster analysis, respondents were classified into three groups. Findings emphasize the risk factors for aggression and how they relate to age-specific developmental tasks. Boys predominate, but the gender gap is not as wide as in offline contexts. For almost half of the children, aggression goes hand in hand with victimization. All the clusters share high levels of emotional deprivation. A sense of lacking social support, from both adults and peers, becomes more relevant among those children with high and more problematic engagement in online aggression. Results confirm that online aggression must be considered within the complex and fluid offline–online continuum cutting across the social contexts in which children grow.
Risks and Safety on the Internet: Comparing Brazilian and European Children
A child's home and school are the most frequently reported locations of internet use in Brazil: 60% of Brazilian children aged 9 to 16 who used the internet claimed to access it from home, and 42% from school, whereas in Europe this proportion is 87% for home access and 63% for schools. However, when it comes to accessing the network from publicly sponsored internet access centres such as Local Area Network (LAN) Houses or cybercafés, the value in Brazil is considerably higher when compared to Europe, 35% against 12% respectively. Access from public libraries is far more popular in Europe (12%) than in Brazil (4%).
