Perspectives on Climate Change, Water and Land Use, Carbon Accumulation, and Effects on Ecosystem after Biofuel Implementation in India ; Not Available
Book: Sustainable Biofuels Development in India ; Concerns over the increasing dependence on energy imports and growing emissions owing to demographic and economic factors have led India to adopt alternative forms of renewable and clean energy, especially biofuels. Though biofuel development provides opportunities for energy security and climate change mitigation, the cultivation of energy crops for biofuel has raised concerns due to the demand for fertilizers, pesticides, water, land, its possible impacts on ecosystems, and also rising food or fuel debate. This chapter tries to assess the implications that production and use of bioethanol and biodiesel have caused in India in the past decade through relevant studies. The greater focus that the current government and the IPCC have put on biofuels also demands that we understand both sides of these fuel resources before they are further expanded. Enhanced scientific understanding, supporting policies, and better technology can go a long way in ensuring that the biofuel implementation achieves its intended purpose. ; Not Available

Trade, openness, and domestic conflict: An empirical investigation for Latin America
In: The Economics of peace and security journal: Eps journal, Band 2, Heft 2
ISSN: 1749-852X
The article reports results of an empirical investigation into trade, openness, and domestic conflict for several Latin American countries. It addresses two main issues: (1) whether variations in trade openness affect the likelihood of the onset of domestic conflict and (2) once initiated, how variations in openness affect conflict duration. For the period 1973- 1995, and controlling for numerous sociopolitical, institutional, and economic factors, our findings suggest that (1) increased trade openness reduces the chance for domestic conflict onset as well as the intensity of domestic conflict and (2) over-reliance on agricultural exports, which can be a consequence of increased openness, is the main factor sustaining conflict. Conflict mitigation policies should keep in mind the role tradable agricultural goods play in this region of the world.
