Ghana: the "Kume Preko" demonstrations: poverty, corruption and dictatorship
Am 11. Mai 1995 demonstrierten in der Hauptstadt Accra 50 000 Menschen gegen die Wirtschaftspolitik der Regierung. Im Verlauf der Demonstration kam es in der Nähe des Makola Market zu gewaltsamen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Demonstranten und Mitgliedern des "Association of Committees for the Defence of the Revolution" (ACDR), ohne daß die Sicherheitskräfte rechtzeitig eingegriffen hätten. Fünf Menschen kamen dabei ums Leben. Diese Demonstration löste eine mehrmonatige Protestwelle aus, die unter dem Motto "Kume Preko" ("Bring mich doch gleich um") bis Oktober alle größeren Städte wie Kumasi, Cape Coast und Ho erfaßt hatte. Damit war es der außenparlamentarischen Opposition erstmals gelungen, die Massen gegen die Regierung zu mobilisieren. Das lose Bündnis "Alliance for Change" (AFC) entwickelte sich dabei zum Sammelbecken des Protestes. Die Berichte in diesem Buch wurden von Mitgliedern der AFC geschrieben. (DÜI-Phl)
