Where Do the Less Affluent Vote? The Effect of Neighbourhood Social Context on Individual Voting Intentions in England
In: Political studies: the journal of the Political Studies Association of the United Kingdom, Band 71, Heft 2, S. 518-541
ISSN: 1467-9248
A widely accepted finding in the literature on political participation is that individuals living in poorer neighbourhoods are less likely to vote than those living in more affluent neighbourhoods. Yet, why some poor residents of the most deprived neighbourhoods are more likely to vote than others is still understudied. This article presents a new theoretical framework arguing that when they believe that most others vote in the neighbourhood, poor citizens are more likely to follow their example than wealthy citizens. To empirically test these claims, I develop a two-level multilevel model using survey data and the Index of Multiple Deprivation for England. My findings point to the higher importance of a social norm of voting for the political behaviour of poor individuals than wealthy individuals. Social norms define which behaviour is right and proper. They are enforced through social interactions with others.
Solar energy discourse in the Sunshine State
This case study of a 2016 Florida constitutional amendment analyses the semiotic devices and mechanisms of shaping public opinion on solar energy and beliefs about energy distribution. After a nationwide rise in rooftop solar installations between 2014 and 2015, utilities in several US states were faced with challenges to their business models. Anticipating similar problems in Florida, utilities and energy corporations promoted constitutional amendments. This semiotic analysis follows the voter from the billboards and flyers to the text on the ballot. Starting from Peirce's phenomenological categories, this critical analysis of the campaign reveals how the goals of the amendment were shrouded in positive environmental and consumer protection narratives. Lakoff 's cognitive linguistics and Stibbe's ecolinguistics support a deeper analysis of the ballot text. This study shows that by leaving key concepts (especially net metering) out of the discourse, the ballot text successfully framed an anti-solar amendment as a pro-consumer measure, while hiding the direct legal implications concerning alternative energy distribution. In particular, this study explains the opposition to the sharing of surplus in the context of neoclassical economics as a key factor in shaping beliefs about alternative energy distribution.

Sparrow Catching in Mattishall, Norfolk in the Early Nineteenth Century
In: Local population studies, Band 107, S. 92-97
ISSN: 2515-7760
This short note examines the role of payments for sparrow catching in the parish of Mattishall in Norfolk in the 1820s. Payments for sparrow catching were made by the poor law authorities to those who otherwise had no income, or an insufficient income to subsist. They were part of the economy of makeshifts. A plausible interpretation of the evidence is that the overseers of the poor in Mattishall felt that it was important that paupers do some work in exchange for their dole money, if suitable work could be found.
