UID/ANT/04038/2013 ; The intertwining of tradition and modernity is a rooted discussion within the Portuguese history of architecture since the mid-twentieth century. From then on, the dichotomisation of erudite and vernacular architectures, urban and rural cultures and settings, nationalist and universalistic values, seems to have been debated and reviewed. This paper aims to contribute to such de-essentialisation processes by focusing on the Portuguese Estado Novo project of inner colonisation conducted by the Junta de Colonização Interna (1936-1974), and examining the dialogues and frictions between its traditional and modern ideals and accomplishments as spatialised in one very particular colony – Pegões. On the one hand, the paper ponders upon the Portuguese colonisation's neo-physiocratic basis, locating the tradition-modernity binomial in the intent to modernise the agrarian world while perpetuating its traditional lifestyle, simultaneously fostering an economic development, social control and national identity. On the other hand, the paper draws upon the laboratorial colony of Pegões, which was the first, the biggest and the only one built in Southern Portugal, to more thickly analyse the colonisation's politics and fulfilments, and its understanding and uses of traditional and modernist ideals, aesthetics and representations. Special attention is given to the dialectics between political and economic agencies, social negotiations, embodied experiences, and meanings and affections, by looking into the official-written history of the colony and emotional-sensory memory of its settlers. This approach results from the work carried out within the scope of MODSCAPES research project (funded by HERA Uses of the Past), notably in what concerns its research line on the memories and perceptions of European colonisation policies, schemes and resulting landscapes. ; publishersversion ; published

UID/ANT/04038/2013 ; Like other European regimes, the Portuguese Estado Novo (1933-1974) implemented an agricultural coloni- sation policy that, influenced by the modernism and neo-physiocraticism ideals, aimed at economic develop- ment, social pacification and the fos- tering of national identities, resulting in the settlement and populating of modern rural landscapes. However, the Portuguese regime copied with an enduring financial crisis, and relied on an official nationalism built upon a conservative-traditional society under the epitomes of God, fatherland, work and family. Unsurprisingly, Portuguese inner colonisation was comparatively small-scaled, aimed to convert farm- hands into rural homeowners, and its modernising experiments had limited impacts on landscape. Landscape and place are not passive concepts, though. They concurrently construe and are construed by political and economic agencies, social negotia- tions, embodied experiences, plural meanings and affections. Looking into primary sources and the outcomes of a micro-ethnography in Boalhosa colony, this paper criss-crosses offi- cial-written history and emotional-sen- sory memory to illustrate consistencies and dissonances between political and social actors' representations of the Portuguese inner colonisation. Based on exploratory observations in Boal- hosa, it argues that while the lack of political assertiveness might have cur- tailed the Portuguese project, it also favoured its social appropriation by lo- cal communities and economies within a contextualised historical and spatial continuum. ; publishersversion ; published

SFRH/BPD/75978/2011 UID/ANT/04038/2013 ; Entendido como forma particular de viajar, voluntária e temporária, que organiza um calendário social, o turismo é um equivalente funcional e simbólico das instituições que conferiam significado à vida pré-secularizada; uma "viagem sagrada" que busca entretenimento e ou conhecimento em outros lugares, conforta sentidos de identidade e ou realiza estratégias de distinção . É também uma prática social dinâmica, constituída e constituinte de reconfigurações dos contextos políticos e económicos, territoriais e tecnológicos, sociais e culturais. Pensar em um fenómeno turístico particular impõe, por isso, considerar flutuações entre representações, projetos e práticas mais amplos. Falar do Hotel de Santa Luzia também. O seu programa oito-novecentista de vilegiatura para elites portuguesas e estrangeiras foi discursiva e materialmente nacionalizado pelo Estado Novo, acabando por integrar a rede Pousadas de Portugal, já em contexto democrático. No curso do tempo, os valores que foram o princípio da sua modernidade converteram-se em passado. As diferentes modalidades de pensar e fazer turismo no Hotel espacializam, assim, uma história do turismo português que confirma a natureza processual e até ambígua dos seus processos culturais e práticas sociais. Seen a particular way of voluntary and temporary travelling which organizes a social calendar, tourism is a functional and symbolic equivalent of the institutions that conferred meaning to life before secularization; a "sacred journey" seeking entertainment and/or knowledge, soothing senses of identity and/ or effecting strategies of distinction (Graburn, 1978, citado em Smith, p. 17-33). It is also a dynamic social practice, constituent of and composed by reconfigurations of different political, economic, territorial, technological, social and cultural contexts. Considering a particular tourism phenomenon therefore imposes a reflection on ampler fluctuations between representations, projects and practices. This also applies when talking about the Hotel de Santa Luzia. Its nineteenth century vacation programme for Portuguese and foreign elites was nationalized by the Estado Novo both in discourse and materialization, eventually integrating, once in a democratic context, the Pousadas de Portugal network. Over time, the values sparking off its modernity have become something of the past. Different ways of thinking and making tourism in the Hotel so spatialize a history of Portuguese tourism, confirming the processual and even ambiguous nature of its cultural and social practices. ; publishersversion ; published

SFRH/BPD/75978/2011 UID/ANT/04038/2013 ; The nexus between tradition and modernity is long-rooted in the intellectual and political discourses about a Portuguese architecture identity, either as a dialogue construed as a national specificity, or as a dichotomy that stresses different actors' distinct and even opposing cultural understandings and political uses of categories of culture and time. Recently, however, the history and critique of modernism in architecture has overcome the mainstream readings of its corpus, mitigating its orthodoxy, and disclosing long-standing relationships between modern architecture proposals and vernacular settlings. Such rereading has triggered a revision of Portuguese history of architecture, in particular regarding the gate-keeping conceptions of Portugal as an isolated and peripheral country, and the political stances of particular architectural productions. This paper aims to discuss the extent of the tradition-modernity bindings in the spacialisation of a Portuguese identity in architectural discourses. In this scope, it will look into the survey on the 20th century Portuguese architecture conducted by the Portuguese architects between 2003 and 2006, as an expression of how Portuguese modern architecture is being emically construed. Taking into account its process and outcomes, and its authors' purposes and reasoning, the paper will examine its modes and hues, evaluating the dynamics beyond the production of a history of architecture and its relating to broader processes of imagining the past and culture in Portugal. ; publishersversion ; published

SFRH/BPD/75978/2011 UID/ANT/04038/2013 ; Within the history of Portuguese architecture, a survey conducted on vernacular dwellings in the mid-1950s has a significant place. This article examines how this survey has been remembered and enhanced, mobilised and updated ever since, playing a part in the empowerment of architecture as a discipline, as a profession, and as a matter of culture in Portugal. The main argument is that the collective and individual recollection of the survey has extolled the aesthetic and ethical lessons it provided for architects practice, activating the symbolic capital of an expression of culture long rooted in Portuguese discourses of national identity. This politics of memory has contributed to the recognition of Portuguese architects authority, autonomy and identity as a profession. ; authorsversion ; published

The purpose of this article is to bridge that knowledge gap while studying the demand for two of the most well-known tourist accommodation products in the Portuguese countryside, namely, TER and the Pousadas. Drawing on a range of sources of material, it shows that the pastoral idyll sought by tourists is experienced differently through the lens of social class representations. In addition, there is evidence here that the choice of accommodation at a destination may well be regarded as a means of social differentiation through tourism. ; authorsversion ; published
