An exploration of the agenda-setting effects of news media investigative reports, focusing on publication of a 5-part series in the Chicago (Ill) Sun-Times dealing with the subject of rape. Interviews were conducted by telephone with 187 residents & with 37 policymakers residing in Chicago. In addition, content analyses were performed on stories published in the Sun Times & the Tribune during the 3-month periods before & after publication of the series. The series had a minimal impact on PO & policy making, but profoundly affected subsequent newspaper coverage of rape. 3 Tables, 1 Appendix, 29 References. Modified HA.

The third in a series of studies (see SA 31:3/83N1083 & SA 33:3/85O8200) on the agenda-setting effects of news media investigations of social issues. Researchers had access to a local 5-part TV investigation of repeatedly brutal police officers before it was broadcast in Feb 1983. A sample of 428 Chicago (Ill) area viewers, selected by random-digit dialing, was surveyed on their attitudes toward various social issues, including the conduct of city police officers. It was hypothesized that Rs exposed to the series would change their responses to questions about police brutality, which they did in statistically significant numbers. A similar survey of "elites" (policymakers or persons with a prior interest in police behavior) was also undertaken before, & repeated after, the series was broadcast. Although no significant change in elite opinions of police behavior occurred, small but statistically significant changes in knowledge of specific police acts were recorded. The agenda-setting implications of the findings are considered. 3 Tables, 24 References. AA
