In the fall of 2018, I was asked to calculate the value of Grand Valley State University's (GVSU) general collection (defined as everything except Special Collections and University Archives) as part of risk mitigation planning and updating insurance coverage. Records indicated that our collection's value was last calculated 11 years earlier, and we lacked both written documentation and institutional memory regarding the process used to calculate that value. While there is a fairly significant body of knowledge around calculating the value of monographs, I struggled to find guidance on calculating the monetary value FDLP collections. There is a robust body of scholarship on promoting the intrinsic value of being a member of the FDLP to library administration and other stakeholders, but very few of them focus on detailed financial benefits of tangible collections.

The Bylaws Committee created an amendment to the bylaws to create a Bylaws Organization Coordinator—we are replacing the bylaws committee with the Bylaws Coordinator—an elected position with membership on Steering and Exec. With the dedicated work of the Preservation Working Group, GODORT wasable to present two programs at Annual 2017. The first one, "Government Information Preservation: Collections and Collaboration," was cosponsored by the Federal Documents Task Force and featured discussions about collaborative approaches to collecting andpreserving government information in all formats. Susanne Caro moderated the discussion, and Anne Harrison (FEDLINK), Roberta Gebhardt (Montana Historical Society), Robbie Sittel (University of North Texas), and James R. Jacobs (Stanford University) presented on projects at the state and national levels.

I've been avoiding writing this "Editor's Corner" for a while because I'm in the midst of a major case of writer's block. I haven't written much of anything in a while, for work or fun, and sitting down to write this was daunting. There's a bit of irony in admitting that I'm dealing with writer's block when I rely on all of you to overcome your own version and submit papers to me, but I like to think that I'm keeping it real by being open about my own professional struggles. Writing is HARD.

I'm sometimes surprised when and where government information becomes useful. (This won't surprise anyone who has ever spent any time in the govdocs world, but humor me—this is my column after all.)Recently I found myself in a bar at 7:30 p.m. on a Thursday. Before you start wondering what a wild and crazy life I lead, I was attending a Junior League meeting and we were planning a children's health fair. We brainstormed ideas and each group came up with a variety of activities to engage kids and help them learn about healthy living. (For context, the focus of the Junior League of Grand Rapids is on improving children's physical health. Projects range from Wellness Adventure Yards that provide a safe place to play to Kids in the Kitchen, where kids are introduced to healthy foods.)

Welcome to a new year of Documents to the People! I'm hoping that at least some of you made it your new year's resolution to submit to DttP. (It's an easy resolution to keep!)This will be a particularly short Editor's Corner, as I want to dedicate the space normally reserved for me to something more important: ALA presidential candidate responses to questions from GODORT's chair, Stephen Woods, and Steering. That information, based on notes by Jill Vassilakos-Long and lightly edited, is below.
