THE SYMBOLIC WHITE SUPREMACY TOWARDS NATIVE AMERICAN IN AVATAR (2009) MOVIE
This research investigated the Avatar movie by James Cameron to show the symbolicexpressions of white supremacy towards Native Americans. The theory of hegemony by Gramsciis used as the tool of analysis. This research used a qualitative research method. The resultof the study shows that there are two ways of supremacy in Avatar movie, domination andintellectual and moral leadership. The domination leadership was carried out by Europeanthat is represented by the military department while intellectual and moral leadership orhegemony was carried out by European in the scientific department that represented Jake,Grace, Norm, and Dr. Max Petel. European carry-out hegemony and domination to NativeAmerican who becomes the subordinate class. The purpose of European in doing hegemonyand domination is based on the desire to take on the natural wealth in Pandora. In carryingout the hegemony, the scientist department opposes the European and defends the NativeAmerican, this process is called opposition. The opposition resulted in a crisis of hegemonyand in the end, the class subordinate resisted, this is what Gramsci meant as the War ofPosition. This movie shows that supremacy in the way of hegemony is more successfulto the way of domination, but the hegemony and dominance were not successful whenthe allies carried out the opposition.
