This article analyses the voting pattern of the Lun Bawang community, the majority ethnic group in the Ba' Kelalan constituency, during the Sarawak state elections held on may 20, 2006, and discusses some of the contentious issues that shaped the electoral outcomes. (Asia J Polit Sci/NIAS-Han)

In Malaysia, democracy is generally interpreted in electoral terms. Arguably, the current electoral system in Malaysia denies ordinary ordinary people their rights to elect their preferred representatives and contributes to the erosion of democracy. The 2004 Ba' Kelalan by-election is a demonstration of the above predicament. This article argues that irregularities in the conduct of the by-election demonstrate how democratic rights had once again been denied. The article also shows how the Lun Bawang community plays a pivotal political role in determining the balance of power among the ethnic groups in Sarawak.(Contemp Southeast Asia/DÜI)

In the 2008 Malaysian general election, the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN or National Front) lost its two‐thirds majority for the first time since independence. BN performed poorly in West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia) but was saved by a strong showing in the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. Understandably, these two states are expected to play a key role in helping BN stay in power in the next general elections. In this article, we shall examine the reasons why BN did well in Sabah. In the main, Sabah politics is still primarily driven by local factors due to its unique history and geographical location. As such, national issues, such as the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy case, do not connect with voters in Sabah.

Based upon observation of the 2016 Sarawak state elections at a time of political turmoil for the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, Electoral Dynamics in Sarawak offers four ethnographic accounts of grassroots electoral politics in diverse constituencies of Sarawak. Covering Ba' Kelalan, the rural stronghold of Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (People's Justice Party) leader Baru Bian; Tupong, the urban Malay-majority stronghold of the PBB; Stakan, a mixed constituency in which postal votes proved decisive; and Repok and Meradong, rural Chinese majority constituencies caught between the Sarawak United People's Party and the Democratic Action Party, this volume exposes the diversity and complexity of Sarawak's electoral geography. Central to the analyses in this volume are not only the role of ethnicity and the urban/rural divide but also the longer term impact of the politics of developmentalism, the personality politics surrounding Chief Minister Adenan Satem and the emerging force of Sarawakian states' rights enshrined in the Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) social movement. Part of a comparative study of electoral dynamics across Southeast Asia, Electoral Dynamics in Sarawak seeks both to analyse the wider lessons to be learned from the 2016 Sarawak state elections as well as to deepen our knowledge and understanding of a state which is likely to play an especially important role in the political future of Malaysia.

Artikel ini meneliti perubahan dalam amalan federalisme di Malaysia dengan merujuk kepada Sarawak di bawah pentadbiran Adenan Satem (2014-2017) sebagai rujukan utama. Penelitian ini dibuat dengan membuat analisa terhadap tuntutan autonomi dan pengembalian semula hak-hak negeri Sarawak seperti yang termaktub dalam Perjanjian Malaysia 1963 (MA63). Artikel ini juga menilai respons kerajaan persekutuan terhadap perjuangan MA63 negeri Sarawak dan implikasi tindakan negeri terhadap hubungan persekutuan-negeri. Artikel ini adalah bersifat kualitatif sepenuhnya. Ia menggunakan gabungan kaedah kajian desktop, arkib dan perpustakaan secara intensif untuk mendapatkan data yang sedia ada. Temu bual mendalam juga dilaksanakan dengan individu-individu tertentu yang mempunyai pengetahuan tentang topik kajian. Dapatan penting kajian dapat dirumuskan seperti berikut: 1) impak tuntutan MA63 Sarawak di bawah Adenan adalah lebih mendalam ekoran daripada kejayaan tindakan populis beliau, prestasi elektoral beliau yang mengagumkan dan pendekatan pragmatik kepimpinan negeri di dalam menguruskan hubungan persekutuan-negeri 2) kerajaan persekutuan memilih untuk memberi respon secara progresif berbanding regresif kepada tuntutan Sarawak kerana Sarawak memiliki pengaruh untuk mengimbangi kuasa politik yang memanfaatkan kerajaan persekutuan 3) terakhir, perubahan dalam sistem federalisme Malaysia sepanjang tahun 2014-2017 memperlihatkan desentralisasi fungsi-fungsi administratif dan pemerkasaan Sarawak dalam pembuatan keputusan.

This article analyses the 16th Sabah State Election, focusing on the Kadazandusun-majority seats. It is based on an ethnographic study comprising interviews with candidates and casual conversations with local people in "competitive" Kadazandusun seats such as Matunggong, Kiulu, Moyog, Tambunan, Keningau, Sook, Nabawan, Tenom and Melalap. The results of the election showed that the Kadazandusun voted for status quo. In addition, following the trend of GE14, the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) managed to maintain its strong presence in the Kadazandusun areas. This article argues that ethnic and personality politics play an instrumental role in determining the Kadazandusun support to GRS particularly STAR (Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Rakyat Sabah/Homeland Solidarity Party) and PBS (Parti Bersatu Sabah/Sabah United Party). While economic factors are decisive as well, the role of the Kadazandusun traditional leadership institution is pertinent in influencing the people's decision to vote.
