Commercial transport: The bumpy road ahead
In: The Middle East, Heft 170, S. 23-26
ISSN: 0305-0734
The article opposes the view that peace in the Gulf war will bring an end to the boom in road haulage. Instead it points out that massive reconstruction will benefit road transport and put Turkish hauliers, who derive a major economic advantage from their half-way location as well as from their wage level, into the lead. The article is however guarded about the long-term prospects and wonders about the possible effect of improved rail connections. Turkish State Railways, as is shown, want to take the opportunity to run standard gauge through a Bosporus tunnel thus linking up European railways to the Middle East system. Through trains from Western Europe could then deliver to major cities of the Middle East. (DÜI-Asd)

Turkey: road blocks around the land bridge
In: The Middle East, Heft 168, S. 36
ISSN: 0305-0734
The article looks at the impact, which the European Community's "singly market" in 1992 will have on the overland transportation linking Europe and the Gulf via Turkey. Turkish truckers, it is argued, increasingly fear that the emergence of standard regulations throughout the community might result into protectionist measures and block the free flow of traffic. The article warns European truckers to feel smug about security in their new club. The community, as is underlined, consists of just 12 of 34 European countries and road hauliers want access to all, especially the Middle East. An EC barrier erected to keep outsiders at bay might also keep EC companies locked in. (DÜI-Asd)
