This paper examines the activism of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Mine Mill and Smelter Workers Union – Canada (MMSW) in the 1940s and 1950s. Drawing on Institutional Ethnography (IE), this paper examines the work of individual MMSW Auxiliary locals across Canada and the ways in which localized political action was coordinated through texts. The paper focuses on how Ladies Auxiliary locals activated two kinds of texts, the MMSW Ladies Auxiliary (LA) Constitution and the district and national Auxiliary newsletters, and examines how these texts coordinated Ladies Auxiliary members' union work. The paper reveals the political organizing efforts of the LA women within their own locals, the MMSW union, and in broader political movements. In doing so, this paper challenges the prevailing notion that Auxiliaries merely served their male union counterparts in times of labour disputes.

This SAGE case study details the way in which I developed my research for my journal article entitled Policing Womens Bodies in an Illiberal Society: the case of Ireland. In this SAGE case study, I explain how I carried out the research for this project and how I structured the research. The key issue with this research project was the enormous scope of the study. The policing of womens bodies is a very broad topic, and this, coupled with the long timeframe of the study, made this project a very big research project. To cope with the scope of the research project, I developed a specific research methodology for the study. This research methodology allowed me (1) to conduct the study I wanted to conduct and (2) to communicate that study concisely and effectively within the limits of a journal article. The research methodology that I developed for the study used historical timelines. In this SAGE case study, I explain the issues that I had to deal with in developing the research that drove the search for this methodology. I explain the simplicity and the utility of the research methodology developed, the way that this research methodology fit with the research project, and the appropriateness of the research methodology for the research project.

Most literature on special elections has focused on first-past-the-post contests and on the performance of governments. Turnout, candidates, and how the electoral system impacts the result have received less attention. This contribution fills these voids by exploring special elections in Ireland, elections conducted under the alternative vote system. Taking a multifaceted approach, it investigates the correlates of turnout, the impact of candidates and the decisive effect of lower preferences, while also testing multiple explanations of government performance. I find Irish special elections live up to the by-election truisms of lower turnout and government loss. Government performance is associated with national economic conditions. By-election victory is more likely among candidates with familial lineage and former members of parliament. Where they come into play, one in five candidates owe their victory to lower preferences.
