The article compares the history of political science (PS) in Chile and Uruguay in the 1970s and 1980s. Drawing on research that includes 58 interviews with Chilean and Uruguayan scholars and a systematic analysis of the main academic journals of these countries, it shows that important aspects of the Chilean case have not been fully taken into account by the literature. While in Uruguay PS was indeed undermined by the authoritarian government, in Chile key components of the current institutional infrastructure of the discipline were created during, and sometimes by, the dictatorship. The contrast between these two PS trajectories problematizes the linear narrative 'democracy?PS' and provides a more nuanced understanding of the discipline's development(s) as well as of its political nature(s). In the background of this piece there is a theoretical meditation on the relationship between knowledge and power.
In most accounts Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship is understood to have impeded the development of political science in Chile. This article seeks to destabilize this understanding by showing that important elements of the infrastructure of the discipline were created during, and sometimes by this authoritarian regime. More concretely, through an in-depth and extensive examination of the political science produced during the Chilean dictatorship, I identify and characterize an institutional and intellectual space that I will call Authoritarian Political Science (APS). The findings challenge the dominant narrative that links the institutionalization of our discipline in Latin America to liberal democracy in a linear fashion, and suggest the need for a nuanced, empirically informed and theoretically dense understanding of political science's multiple historical trajectories. In the following pages I offer a basic interpretation of this recent and incomplete "queering of Uruguay". I do so using two moments of explanation: the structure and the conjuncture of the country. I am not using these terms in a conceptually complex way. By "structure" I refer to the historical trajectory and some main stable features of Uruguay that (I will argue) are helpful for "making sense" of the issues addressed here. From this starting point, we will be ready to look at what is going on today, and here again it is necessary to choose a window, a point of view: in this case, the spectacular growth in visibility of queer social movements and their success in putting sexual diversity issues onto the social and institutional agenda (Aguilar Villanueva, 1992; 1992b & 1992c). But this achievement cannot be understood without considering the arrival of the "progressive" Frente Amplio (Broad Front) to government in 2004. Thus, I will explore the articulation among queer social movements, public policy and state discourse.
This essay explores the implications of what we call attachments to innocence for critical scholarship and progressive politics. After tracing the appearance of innocence in various strands of contemporary thought, we turn to how it shields individuals and groups from examining the depth of our own participation in oppression and harm. This evasion of responsibility works in our perspective as a hindrance to understanding power and engaging with others ethically. The essay more concretely examines how the reductionist and authoritarian dimensions of innocence dovetail with the neoliberal uptake of 'progressive' politics in university and activist settings. We are interested in how academics and activists of different kinds are rewarded for cultivating their innocent-selves through discursive and material interventions that leave power relations untouched. It is not merely monetary or status rewards that perpetuate this, but the crisis produced by our implication in the very violence we reject. Working with and through the mobility of agency, power, abuse, and justice, we explore what is at stake in shedding our attachments to innocence in the hope of a different sort of encounter – one that proceeds from the recognition that innocence is not a precondition for our engagement in political life.

The article intervenes in the international conversation about the possibilities and limitations of narrative writing in international relations and political science. Concretely, it proposes a theoretical comparison between "fortress writing" and "narrative voice". The first corresponds to the style of thinking and writing that has dominated these disciplines. Instead, we show that the narrative voice constitutes an opportunity to problematize and loosen the most constrictive features of fortress writing. The text does not propose the generalized adoption of narrative writing —an unviable and even undesirable project— but suggests that, when successful, narrative expands possibilities for research and reflection, enabling less "bellicose" ways of producing knowledge. Thus, narratives open a breathing space in academia. However, as with any intellectual approach, narrative writing entails some risks. Instead of engaging on common critiques, already dealt with by the literature, the essay explores three risks that threaten narrative to become another type of fortress writing: the attachment to innocence, the attachment to trauma, and the moralizing denial of complexity.
This article reflects on the relationship between political science and political theory in Latin America. On the one hand, we argue that the way political theory is treated by mainstream political science reveals some of the most problematic 'personality traits' of the latter. On the other hand, we suggest that – if allowed – political theory can contribute to maintain and cultivate pluralism in the discipline, thus strengthening its democratic imagination. Hence, we contend that there is much at stake in the relationship between political science and political theory in the region. Although the article draws on research agendas focused on critical theory and on the study of power and knowledge dynamics within political science, we also offer an experiential and subjective perspective that we deem necessary to underscore. We aim to foster debate and to generate the conditions for political theory to be heard.
