This study aims to improve students' speaking skills at the Department of English. Based on interviews carried out to get initial data on the students' speaking skills, it was shown that the students had problems in speaking due to inadequate knowledge of the language which in turn made the students felt unconfident to speak. The students were not familiar with various speaking activities facilitating them to speak. They read the text to convey ideas and a lack of strategies when speaking. To help the students, task-based learning was adapted through action research in one-semester courses. Fifteen students in the third semester participated in this study. The data were taken from the results of the pre-test to post-test, interview, and observation. The findings reveal that the use of task-based learning helps the students improve their speaking skills of three indicators assessed: accuracy, vocabulary, and comprehension. The students manage to complete the tasks by conducting various activities through three phases of learning: the pre-task, task-cycle, and form focus. They succeed in improving their speaking skills and gaining their confidence. The students can evaluate their learning in pairs and group works.

Women are considered weak and are considered inferior to men. This is widely used in novels as a form of literary work that can provide changes in thinking. The purpose of this research is to examine the value of women "Ayna" in the novel "Bidadari Bermata Bening" in terms of the theme. This qualitative research uses content analysis methods. The data sources are in the form of words, phrases and sentences in the novel. Based on the first theme, women experience family conflicts and are used for political purposes. Ayna is depicted as a figure of a woman who is acted on from a human rights perspective. The second theme is Ayna's struggle to achieve her dreams and love. Ayna is a smart woman who always carries out religious orders. The love that Ayna has is well guarded and finally, Ayna finds happiness.Perempuan dianggap kaum lemah dan dianggap lebih rendah dari laki-laki. Hal tersebut banyak diangkat dalam novel sebagai bentuk karya sastra yang mampu memberikan perubahan pemikiran. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengkaji nilai perempuan "Ayna" dalam novel "Bidadari Bermata Bening" ditinjau dari tema. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan metode analisis isi. Sumber data berupa kata, frasa, dan kalimat dalam novel. Berdasarkan tema pertama, perempuan mengalami konflik keluarga, dimanfaatkan untuk kepentingan politik. Ayna digambarkan sebagai sosok perempuan yang tertindak dari segi hak kemanusiaan. Tema kedua adalah perjuangan Ayna dalam meraih cita-cita dan cintanya. Ayna menjadi sosok perempuan cerdas dan selalu menjalankan perintah agama. Cinta yang dimiliki Ayna dijaga dengan baik dan akhirnya Ayna mendapatkan kebahagiaan.

In this study, participants acquired three types of language, those are regional, national and foreign ones. The purpose of this research was to explore how Indonesian polyglots acquire several different languages. We collected data through demographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews obtained from nine participants. Four salient themes and sub-themes that emerged in this research were (a) mastering languages through instructed learning (learning in formal educational institution and learning in informal educational institution), (b) gaining extra amounts of languages input beyond the classroom (getting more access to a national language environment and getting more access to foreign languages environment), (c) learning languages autonomously (self-directed learning through printed resources and self-directed learning through media and technology), and (d) acculturating with a new language group in society. The findings indicated that the polyglots acquired several different languages through a natural process, a learning process, and a mixture of both naturalistic as well as instructed experiences.

The purpose of this research is to describe in depth about Palembang Malay language defense in Palembang. Data analysis was done by using the method of ethnography according to Spradley with progressive stretching sequence (developmental research sequence Spradley). Data collection techniques were conducted through interviews, observation, field notes, document studies, questionnaires, and photography. The steps taken by the researcher are (1) the determination of focus, (2) the submission of questions, (3) data collection, (4) analyzing and interpreting data. Further data analysis technique is done using Spradley (ethnography) model. Researchers analyzed field data collected from observations of participants to find questions. Furthermore, researchers analyzed field notes. There are four types of analysis: domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, component analysis and theme analysis. Based on the results of the analysis can be concluded that all domains still use Palembang Malay language in everyday life. Nevertheless on the research findings, researchers also found some vocabulary that has been rarely used in the conversation / daily communication of Palembang Malay society. Factors that threaten the existence of Palembang Malay language is the entry of immigrants from the outside, the natives of Palembang who moved to other areas, marriage antardaerah Palembang city. Efforts that can be made for the defense and revitalization of Palembang Malay language is to make Palembang Malay as a subject in school, menghidupuburkan Palembang Malay language use in the mass media and support from the local government for Palembang Malay language defense by creating a special law that discusses the use of language Malay Palembang so that it can continue to survive and develop so avoid the extinction.

Learning languages independently can be more accessible in today's online environment. Polyglots, who are speakers of more than three languages, take advantage of this online learning environment to learn even more languages in Indonesia. Using transcendental phenomenology, the researchers interviewed these adult learners on their lived experience with online platforms for learning languages not traditionally spoken or used in daily life in Indonesia. Researchers found that the polyglots reported learning many foreign languages through interactive resources, receptive resources, social media, and authentic resources. Importantly, they held positive attitudes towards online learning platforms and their experiences left them with feelings of helpfulness, enjoyability, even bravery. In many cases, these polyglots often used freely available online resources to learn their foreign languages successfully. Implications include the idea that their language learner experience coupled with online opportunities can lead to successful language learning experiences.
