Poverty alleviation and the most disadvantaged groups in Bangladesh agriculture
In: The Bangladesh development studies: the journal of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, Band 14, Heft 1, S. 29-58
ISSN: 0304-095X
Focussing on certain issues of contemporary relevance and operational significance in the specific Bangladesh context, the article analyses some aspects related to poverty alleviation of the most disadvantaged in an economy characterised by traditional agriculture. It is argued that because of the limits on alternative ways of improving the conditions of the most disadvantaged, promotion of non-farm employment is perhaps the only major way of alleviating poverty. Variations in Terms of Exchange and Their Impact on Farm Households in Bangladesh
In: The journal of development studies: JDS, Band 17, Heft 4, S. 317-335
ISSN: 0022-0388
"Terms of exchange" are estimated for different farm household groups in Bangladesh. The phrase "terms of exchange" rather than the usual "terms of trade" is used to underline certain conceptual & methodological distinctions. The former expression is used in a disaggregative sense, to make the concept broader & to make it amenable to drawing implications for income distribution. In the face of an improvement in the overall terms of exchange, those for specific farm household groups show differential movements. Implications of the results are indicated. 5 Tables, Appendix. Surplus utilisation and capital formation in Bangladesh agriculture
In: The Bangladesh development studies: the journal of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, Band 8, Heft 4, S. 25-46
ISSN: 0304-095X
Although farm households have sufficient surplus, the extent of surplus reinvestment is low and inversely related to farm size. The existence of sharecropping arrangements dampens incentive for productive investment by both landlords and tenants. Adoption of new technology may lead to increased reinvestment of surplus. (Re)Visiting Private Television Research in Bangladesh: Call for New Research Agenda in News Media Study
In: Social Science Review, S. 79-98
Private television is the most popular mass media in Bangladesh with a vast audience of both news and programs. However, research on private television and its news media has not advanced sufficiently. Analysing available research on different databases this study identifies general trends in Bangladesh's private television and its news media research which shows that in addition to low volume of research, most of the study focused on some common aspects resulting in many significant areas unexamined. Finally, this article suggests new agendas in news media research with particular focus on the role of the state, ownership and news labour—three key stakeholders of the private television news media. This investigation will contribute to the scholars and industry insiders to identify the gap in private television research, especially in relation to the news media, and take necessary initiatives.
