The Soviet Armed Forces as the "School of the Nation"
In: Canadian review of studies in nationalism: Revue canadienne des études sur le nationalisme, Band 32, Heft 1-2, S. 121-131
ISSN: 0317-7904
This article examines Soviet military doctrine, which describes the domestic role of the socialist army in defense of socialist ideology from internal threats & transmission of socialist ideology from one generation to another. While the notion of defense against internal threats gradually declines during the late 1970s & 1980s, the role of the Soviet armed forces as the "school of the nation" remained a focal point of the regime. This was not only because of the need to contain a multinational population within a single mold or to combat ideological subversion from the West, but, more remarkably, because of the need to suppress emerging nationalism among minority peoples within the Soviet Union. The drive to "Russify" non-Russian military personnel & the negative impacts of this initiative on ethnic recruits are explored here in detail. References. C. Brunski

Argues that the collapse resulted from a systemic crisis involving the Communist Party's inability to preserve its monopoly on power in the face of mounting social and economic pressures, and also from an imperial crisis in which the system proved unable to control or accommodate ethnic nationalism as articulated by minority political elites.
