The International Colloquia on the Brain and Aggression offer the occasion for international scientific exchanges between multidisciplinary groups of experts on the phenomenon of violence. This conference in H?v?z, one of the most attractive spots in Europe, is the 36th of their international meetings already held all over the world since more than thirty years ago, and the third in Hungary (see: www.cicainternational.org). The main goal of the CICA is bridging biologically based approaches and those built on the social sciences, in the understanding that real solutions will only be found through the integration of insights reached from the interaction of many different fields and levels. Fruits of this tireless effort are the about thirty scientific books and monographs already published. This XXXVI CICA aims to study the phenomena of conflicts, aggression, violence and peace through a new, integrated, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary approach that considers both psycho-socio-cultural and biological factors, as a basis for a continuing fulfillment of our collective responsibility for "inventing peace." During the conference, about thirty participants from fifteen countries of four continents (Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Spain, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Mexico, United States of America, China, Hong Kong, Turkey, and South Africa), will also exchange scientific information on their latest research findings on the topic, which will hopefully also help to further elaborate new ideas and develop new collaborative, innovative and interdisciplinary research lines, so that the conference will be the starting point of significant collaborative research projects. We believe that the study of conflict, aggression and violence is currently one of the most relevant issues, especially if we consider the competitive life pattern in humans' relationships which is now prevailing all over the world. Indeed, it appears that in this historical period there is no scientific problem that needs to be addressed with greater urgency, accuracy, and correctness than the study of violence in its various forms. The need for scientific data in support of peace, cooperation, and a positive resolution of conflicts has never been stronger.

This volume offers an interdisciplinary and global perspective on aspects of security and defence, with a special focus on the protection of social infrastructures in the face of various forms of violence. It examines some multi-faceted solutions and stresses the need to approach the problem from many disciplines. The optimistic conclusion from this work is that there are concrete and specific ways to address conflict and violence, and the importance of being alert in order to prevent their eventual negative consequences. This work integrates and synthesises theory, research, and public policy analysis in an effort to solve the complex questions and problems presented by this topic, and focuses on a range of topics, including militia and police, law, diplomacy, aggression and conflict studies, and psychology. This encourages a broader perspective and thought-process global collaboration and cooperation, and an integrated synthesis of knowledge. It broadens the conceptualisation of the phenomena under discussion and links them with tangible examples. This book represents an important resource for researchers and students of security and defence, violence, and peace, as well as anyone with an interest in studying methods of protecting critical infrastructures and more specifically of probable the most important social infrastructure, the people, reducing the threats of terrorism from a psychological approach

This special issue entitled "Towards a better understanding of aggression and other related concepts" is a product of the XXXVII CICA International Conference co-organized by two Polish universities: Kazimierz Wielki University of Bydgoszcz and the University of Zielona G?ra. It took place from the 22 to the 25 June, 2014 and was attended by about 100 participants from 16 countries [1]. The aim of the Conference was to study the phenomena of aggression and conflict resolution using a comprehensive, integrated and interdisciplinary approach which takes into account both biological and psycho-socio-cultural factors. Several communications dealing with emotions, including anger and fear, and others with behaviors such as aggression, violence and terrorism, have been selected for this issue. The discussion on aggression and other related concepts is carried out from various scientific perspectives, which include traditional experimental psychology with a special focus on the role of family relationships and cultural factors, social and political psychology with a special focus on the role of State policies, and other theoretical perspectives which try to integrate their psychological framework with contributions from western and eastern philosophy, the neurosciences, biology, quantum physics, and complexity theory.

The seeds for the 5th Annual CICA-STR (Coloquios Internationales sobre Cerebro y Agresion and Society for Terrorism Research) International Conference were planted at a CICA Colloquium held in Bodrum, Turkey, in 2009. At that time, Martin Ramirez met Alvin Brown and Stephen Thom of the Diversity Training Institute for Public Safety (DTIPS), California, USA, and began talking about the possibility of a conference on aggression and violence to be held in the USA. From those discussions DTIPS sought partners to co-sponsor and participate in preparing for the conference. DTIPS, although its focus is on specific training for the prevention and intervention of aggression and violence, decided to hose the conference because the goals of understanding, sharing and collaborating on research and studies related to violence and aggression were common to both DTIPS and CICA.
