In Karl Mannheim's classic work Ideology and Utopia (1929), he took the position that the two concepts of ideology & utopia are oppositional because an ideological mentality tries to maintain social situations while a utopian one tries to transform them. It is argued here, referencing Paul Ricoeur (1997), that the two concepts are in fact complementary & both are situated within the problem of authority. They both approach knowledge of reality, representation of reality, & the general social conditions of the present, & can incorporate a political program. The difference between the two concepts is largely in their presentation, not content. Similarities between different models of the ideal society in utopian thought are described, citing a large number of utopian philosophers grouped across the models of abundance, nature, morals, millennium, & utopia per se. Complementarity between utopian thought & political ideologies in Marx & Engels is discussed. References. M. Pflum
