This paper presents the evolution and most relevant characteristics of binational (Portuguese/ Brazilian) same-sex marriages in Portugal, from 2010 to 2020, comparing them with the binational heterosexual ones. The analysis was based on marriage micro-data published by the National Statistics Office.
Data reveals that the increase of binational marriages has been more significant among samesex couples than among heterosexual couples; binational same-sex couples are younger than heterosexual ones, although they also record lower levels of age-related homogamy, and are more qualified than hetero couples. Hetero binational couples engaged more frequently in cohabitation before marriage and tend to opt for shared estate ownership.
This study enables a diagnosis of the present situation and constitutes a contribution to knowledge surrounding the marriage market within groups that are minorities not only as immigrants but also as homosexuals.

Abstract
Some scholars have hypothesized that social integration in the European Union (EU) is a trigger for bi-national European marriages. Although this idea has been the motivation behind some research, empirical evidence shows that the effect of accession to the EU has had a limited effect on partner choice. This study aims to add to the knowledge on this issue by analysing the trends and patterns of marriages between Portuguese and non-Portuguese citizens between 1997 and 2011. We conducted bivariate and multivariate analyses using official data on marriages that took place in Portugal, with the results showing that bi-national European marriages remained stable throughout the period, although some nuances are evident depending on the type of marriage. While Portuguese-EU15 marriages declined over time, those between native Portuguese and other Europeans increased. Gender differences determined the development and composition of these marriages. This article also notes the existence of three distinct types of bi-national union: labour, recomposed and highly educated couples. The final part of the article seeks to explain and interpret the findings, specifically by focusing on the increase in cohabitation as a functional substitute for bi-national European marriage, the need to compare and combine the number of marriages in both spouses' countries, and changes in the structure of the Portuguese matrimonial market due to the arrival of new social groups (e.g. Brazilian and Eastern European).

UID/SOC/04647/2013 SFRH/BPD/112462/2015; SFRH/BPD/77611/2011 ; Although the institutionalization of sociology in Portugal was only made possible after the revolution of 1974, it is currently characterized by a remarkable vitality, apparent for instance in the number and diversity of members of the Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia as well as that of participants at its national conferences. However, significant challenges have also emerged, stemming not only from the expansion and diversification of sociologists, but also from the economic crisis, austerity policies, the enlargement of social science specializations, and the pressures in politics and the media to give advantage to business, law and engineering professionals, courses and research. The present paper will be organized in three sections. Firstly, we will analyse the existing courses of sociology in Portugal (at BA, master and PhD level) as well as the regional location, activity sectors and professional positions of those who have graduated in sociology. Secondly, we will discuss the participation of those different profiles in the Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia throughout time and the ongoing efforts to improve such participation. According to Burawoy's typology, we suggest that, despite some tensions, academic and critical sociologies have been developed and working together in Portugal, but the connection with a large group of applied sociologists has weakened over time. Public sociology may be the missed link to foster a dialogue among sociologists and other sectors of society. Our national association's current strategy to develop such links will be sketched. Thirdly, we will present a broad overview of the internationalization of Portuguese sociology, through collaboration in projects and networks, especially with Europe and Portuguese-speaking countries like Brazil and Angola. ; publishersversion ; published
