The COVID-19 emergency has hit the whole world, finding all countries unprepared to face it. The first studies focused on the medical aspects, neglecting the psychological dimension of the populations that were forced to face changes in everyday life and in some cases to stay forcedly at home in order to reduce contagion. The present research was carried out in Italy, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. The aim was to analyze the perception of happiness, mental health, and the sense of loneliness experienced by adults during the lockdown due to the COVID pandemic. Specifically, the variables will be examined in relation to gender difference, living alone, with partner, or with partner and children. The research followed a quantitative approach using an online questionnaire. The project involved 1100 subjects from whom 721 participants (75.5% women) were extrapolated. Of them, 17.3% claimed to live alone, 39.5% with their partner, and 43.1% with their partner and children. The results show that people in general experienced a lower level of happiness and mental health and higher levels of loneliness compared to normative sample. The lockdown and pandemic condition due to COVID-19 seems to have canceled the gender differences in the perception of happiness and mental health, while it seems to have increased the perception of loneliness experienced by males compared to the pre-pandemic condition. In addition, those who lived alone perceived a greater level of loneliness than those who lived with their partner or partner and children. Unexpectedly, no significant differences emerged regarding the level of happiness and mental health between those who had direct contact with the virus and those who did not. These data should make political decision-makers reflect on the need to pay more attention to the implications that such drastic measures as a lockdown can have on people's psychological well-being.

Correctional officers (COs) play a crucial role within prisons. The purpose of this study is to analyze the intercultural sensitivity and individual and organizational well-being perceptions of COs. The participants were 400 COs employed in different prisons in northwestern Italy. Analysis of the results shows that there is a significant relationship between intercultural sensitivity and perceived emotional exhaustion and that this affects life satisfaction and thus the entire organization. More attention needs to be paid to the figure of the CO who interacts with people from different backgrounds often under difficult circumstances.

Summary Although migrant families comprise a small number of immigrants, they present a significant challenge for the host community. In the Italian context, social services support migrant families through paths to autonomy and integration in the community. The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions that families and social workers have of "parenting" and "doing family" (training and management of family identity, roles and daily practices) in the complexity of migration. The study involved 15 immigrant parental couples, using family interview techniques and 12 social workers in 3 mini-focus groups. The collected materials were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using grounded theory. Findings The main results are identified and discussed as strengths, critical points and challenges. Some of the themes such as "willingness to work" or "lack of job opportunities" are common to both family members and social workers. Other themes are relevant to one group only. Among these, "availability and support of social workers" only emerged among families, whereas "education and respecting the rules" only emerged among social workers. Applications The results indicate that it is necessary for social workers to engage in a meaningful helping relationship with families, build networks of inclusion services, and also with the support of mediators overcome linguistic and cultural barriers. Social workers should involve families throughout he integration process. Furthermore, social services must also consider how families experience the difficulty of relating to social workers, which represents an obstacle to support for social integration.

Purpose: The objective of this research is to investigate the perception that migrant families and social workers have of their relationship and of the services offered and received in the reception path. Method: The qualitative research involved thirty parents with semi-structured family interviews and their twelve reference social workers, with focus group. The collected materials were transcribed verbatim and analysed through the grounded theory, using the NVivo software. Results: Results highlighted strengths, critical issues and challenges, some shared between social workers and families, like the sense of mutual trust and the perception of abandonment and loneliness. Others were expressed only by social workers as a greater attention to families, or by families as the possibility of social-health services. Conclusion: Many of the practical implications have been discussed such as the supervision of social workers, the widespread hospitality and the development of skills of social workers but also of families for social and work integration.

Correctional officers (COs) are subject to the development of burnout syndrome. This investigation focuses on those factors that contribute to burnout syndrome in COs who work in Italian penitentiary institutions. Utilizing a qualitative methodology with 50 northern Italian COs, the study finds burnout to be caused by two types of factors, organizational and psychosocial. Notably, the results highlight feelings of anguish, sadness, and abandonment and CO requests for psychological help.

This research article as a part of larger study intends to explore the role of teaching qualitative methods is not easy and often represents a great challenge. In this work, we describe our experience of teaching a qualitative methods course for undergraduate psychology students. In this course, we used a Team-Based Learning (TBL) approach in which we had students cluster into small groups to enhance their education by having them become more active in their learning. To teach qualitative methods, we used TBL and in this paper, we present the exemplification of this method by choosing Photovoice. The Team-Based methods may be thought of as a new approach for teaching qualitative methods at the university because it allows the students to reach relevant life skills, like reflexivity, sensitivity, and critical thinking that are relevant not only for qualitative researchers but also for the psychologists and the social service professionals.

AbstractDuring the COVID‐19 pandemic, families experienced new challenges related to reorganizing living spaces and the need to renegotiate domestic and care roles. This paper aims to understand how Italian families have reacted to this situation with respect to psychological well‐being, the management of domestic and care activities and solidarity networks of care. The participants were 560 Italian subjects who reported having a parental role. The protocol included a measure of well‐being (the General Health Questionnaire‐12) and some questions related to the time dedicated to domestic activities or to caring for people, the perception of conflict within the family and solidarity networks of care. The data underline how mothers continued to devote more time to home and care activities than fathers, despite the presence of both partners at home during the lockdown. The results also indicate that mothers participated to a greater extent than fathers in solidarity activities, confirming that this dimension is linked to gender. Furthermore, fathers and mothers perceived a lower condition of well‐being in relation to the pre‐pandemic period.

The Covid-19 pandemic situation redefines the rules of social and relational behavior. These changes affect the economic, political, individual and family dimension. In particular, families experience new challenges, related to the new ways of working, reorganizing and sharing living spaces and the need to renegotiate the domestic and care roles previously delegated outside. These new conditions of cohabitation can lead to the emergence of conflicts, with important consequences for the psychological well-being of the subjects. This survey is part of a wider multidisciplinary research and focuses on the redistribution of gender roles in domestic and care activities, on family conflict and on the happiness level of respondents. The quantitative survey involved 550 married/cohabiting subjects (76.0% women). The data underline how despite women continue to devote more time to home and care activities than men, this is not perceived as a conflict. Despite the partners spend more time at home, the difference in gender roles within the family is confirmed. The conflict is perceived especially in couples with children in the age of 7-11 and 12-14. During the lockdown period, men and women perceive a lower condition of happiness, and in relation to the normative value (pre-pandemic period). Furthermore, there is a lower perception of happiness in those who experience conflict situations. ; L'emergenza Covid-19 sta ridefinendo regole di comportamento sociale ma anche relazionali, che hanno inevitabili ripercussioni a livello economico, politico, individuale e famigliare. In particolare, le famiglie si sono trovate a sperimentare nuove sfide, dettate dalle nuove modalità di lavoro, dalla riorganizzazione e condivisione più assidua degli spazi abitativi e dalla necessità di rinegoziare i ruoli domestici e di cura, che spesso venivano delegati all'esterno. Tali nuove condizioni di convivenza possono portare al sorgere di conflitti, con importanti conseguenze per la salute psicologica dei soggetti. Il presente lavoro fa parte di una più ampia ricerca multidisciplinare e si focalizza sulla ridistribuzione dei ruoli nelle attività domestiche e di cura ai tempi del covid-19, sul conflitto familiare e sui livelli di felicità dei soggetti. La ricerca quantitativa ha coinvolto 550 soggetti coniugati/conviventi (76.0% donne). I risultati mostrano come benché la donna continui a dedicare maggior tempo alle attività domestiche e di cura rispetto all'uomo, questo non sia percepito come motivo di conflitto. Nonostante, quindi, entrambi i partner stiano passando maggior tempo tra le mura domestiche, permane la differenza dei ruoli rivestiti all'interno della famiglia. Il conflitto è percepito soprattutto nelle coppie con figli nella fascia d'età 7-11 e 12-14. Per quanto riguarda la percezione di benessere, misurato attraverso il costrutto della felicità, nella situazione di quarantena, sia per le donne che per gli uomini, è inferiore rispetto ai valori normativi di riferimento (condizione pre-pandemica). Si registra, inoltre, una percezione di benessere inferiore in coloro che sperimentano situazioni conflittuali.
