This book is a comparative study which sheds a new empirical and theoretical light on the nature of post-communist capitalism in 11 EU new member countries of Central and Eastern Europe, or CEE11.

Extending and modifying a well-established conceptual framework for comparative capitalism rooted in new institutional economics and economic sociology, it offers a better explanation for transition-specific and path-dependent factors inherent to systemic transformation. Based on a vast dataset, the book therefore illuminates the (dis)similarities among the institutional architectures in the EU countries. Thus, the book argues that the evolving capitalism in Central and Eastern Europe exhibits strong symptoms of institutional ambiguity or a ""patchwork"" nature which makes it a distinct category from any of the co-existing models of Western European capitalism.

This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of comparative political economy, Eastern European politics, post-communist studies and more broadly to researchers in the fields of economics, European politics and the wider social sciences. It will also be of significance to journalists, policymakers, members of international organizations and consultancies with an interest in Central and Eastern Europe and in European integration.

The paper focuses on three main objectives. First, it assesses the progress of structural reforms implemented in six Western Balkan transition economies, i.e. Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. Second, it outlines the major economic and institutional weaknesses of these countries. Third, using the conceptual framework of new institutional economics it suggests a non-standard general approach to the reform process and provides guidelines for the design and sequencing of the most needed structural reforms which may enhance the international competitiveness and improve the macroeconomic performance of the Western Balkan countries in the future. ; Paper prepared for the Aspen Conference on "Economic Development in the Western Balkans: on the Road to Competitive Market Economies?" The aim of this contribution is a comparative analysis of the challenges Poland and Greece (and more broadly – CEE-10 and GIPS countries) had to face in the past as latecomers to the European Union and are facing now, in the aftermath of the world financial and economic crisis of 2008-09.

The aim of the present contribution is two-fold. First, we are going to briefly overview the theoretical arguments suggesting that regional economic integration may enhance the process of real economic convergence or catching up by less-advanced members of integration arrangements towards the development levels prevailing in more advanced member countries. Second, as an empirical test of the foregoing theoretical claims, we will embark on an analysis of actual economic growth paths of the present member countries of the enlarged European Union – both the 'old' (i.e. EU-15) and 'new' ones that is ten transition economies from East-Central Europe who joined the EU in 2004 or 2007, respectively (CEE-10 or EU-10). In particular, we will try to show that the process of regional integration in Europe tended as a rule to enhance the real economic convergence of income levels both within the EU-15 group as well as between the new (EU-10) and the old (EU-15) member countries.

The aim of the present paper is to show the most aggregate quantitative results of systemic transformation in Poland to date, in terms of changes of country's absolute and relative development levels, i.e. its GDP per capita compared to other countries, in particular fellow transition economies and UE members. The analysis consists of four parts. In the first part, to shed more light on the present comparative position of Poland on world development ladder, a historical perspective is provided. Between 1990 and 1989, i.e. during the period of command economy, Poland witnessed a real divergence trend. widening the development gap not only towards Western industrialized economies but also vis-à-vis fellow socialist countries. In part two the process of fast catching up in Poland vis-à-vis both groups of economies between 1990 and 2005 is illustrated with data on economic growth and indices showing the relative development levels. During this period Poland was the fastest growing transition economy while also displaying higher GDP growth rates compared to the UE-15 average. Part three shows the present comparative position of the Polish economy in the world and in the enlarged European Union, both in terms of economic potential (total GDP) and development level (GDP per capita). This paper seeks to explore the fiscal performance in Poland - one of the top reformer transition economies and simultaneously the largest of ten new EU member countries. At the same time it aims to highlight major fiscal implications of country's accession to the European Union. If not properly addressed, some of these implications or challenges may endanger Poland's fiscal stability and by the same token – adversely affect the speed and smoothness of country's integration process with the European Union. The aim of the present paper is to discuss the role of the Mass Privatization Programme (MPP) in Poland, as a vehicle of change in the prevailing patterns of corporate governance in the emerging market economy. It is claimed that the Programme (also known as the National Investment Funds, or NIF, scheme) deserves the name of a genuine institutional innovation, as a novel way of effective privatization of firms involved coupled with their overhaul and in-depth restructuring.
