The major reasons why there has been a minimum of dialogue between the disciplines of econ's & history in the study of Indian econ history since 1600 are discussed. The resulting shallowness of the econ'ts' contribution to the subject & the pedestrianism of the bulk of the work produced by the historians are underlined. But despite such limitations, considerable achievements have recently been made by such authors as Irfan Habib, Benoy Chaudhuri, Ranajit Guha, & B. R. Grover. A multidisciplinary approach is suggested, possibly based on the efforts of a team of specialists covering all the relevant disciplines, particularly econ'ts, statisticians & historians. The individual res'er,too, could experiment with this approach so long as he acquires all the elementary tools & seeks the criticism & guidance of specialists. Some problems which could be tackled through this approach would concern patterns of soc expectation, econ behavior in an agrarian society, the impact of demographic trends on the org of agri & on Ru society. Such studies would involve a detailed scrutiny of data with reference to a long series of interrelated queries suggested by several disciplines. They would have to be microscopic. M. Maxfield.
