In July 2019, the Colloquium on Violence and Religion (COV&R) held its annual conference at the University of Innsbruck dealing with the challenges of global migration. Experts from many fields gathered to discuss the problem of migration, and to elucidate it with the help of mimetic theory. However, the migration theme can be read as part of a larger challenge: how do we perceive the other – the other who migrates from a foreign land, the other who thinks and behaves differently than "we" do, or the other who transcends this world altogether, and whom the religions call "God"? Aware that imagination is a mimetic process, the contributors to this volume try to illuminate different aspects of this complex entanglement, asking whom or what we mean by "the other": the stranger and migrant, the brother or sister, nature that envelops or defies us, the transcendent Other. The three parts of this book employ mimetic theory to analyze the imagination of the other and the challenges of migration, to illustrate the politics of migration, looking at particular problems and case studies, and to probe the imagination of the other between exclusion and adoration.

The overall aim of the research platform World Order-Religion-Violence is to promote excellence in social and human science research on religion and politics at the University of Innsbruck and to guarantee the diffusion of this particular competence on a national and international level." - Der Sammelband widmet sich der kritischen Diskussion der Thesen von Mark Lilla und Heinrich Meier über die Rückkehr des Religiösen in die Politik, besonders im Blick auf den Islam. Systematisch werden die Konzeptionen Politische Theologie und Politische Philosophie hinsichtlich des Problems der Gewalt, wie es sich seit der Zeit der "Religionskriege" und besonders in unserer Gegenwart stellt, untersucht. Dabei geht es vor allem auch um die Prüfung der These, inwiefern sich die westliche Moderne tatsächlich von einer Ablösung der Politischen Theologie durch die Politische Philosophie kennzeichnen lässt, sowie um die noch grundsätzlichere Frage, ob eine Absage an Politische Theologien überhaupt möglich ist. Aus historischer Sicht wird die Frage diskutiert, wie sich die Konzeption der "Politischen Religionen" gegenüber der systematischen Unterscheidung von Politischer Theologie und Politischer Philosophie verhält: Wie lassen sich die Entstehung der totalitären politischen Religionen von Nationalsozialismus und Marxismus-Leninismus im Blick auf die These von der "Great Separation" verstehen?

Die Beiträge des Sammelbands gehen - mit Ausnahme der Aufsätze von Johan Maier und Christian Rutishauser - auf eine Tagung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft "Religion-Politik-Gewalt" zurück, die im Jahr 2009 in Innsbruck stattfand. Sie thematisieren die Frage der politischen Philosophie und der politischen Theologie sowie wichtige historische Fragestellungen, die mit dem Begriff der politischen Religionen verbunden sind, u. a. die Frage nach dem religiösen Sozialismus. Der vorliegende Beitrag leitet den Sammelband ein und gibt einen Überblick über die sich anschließenden Einzelbeiträge. (ICE2)
