UIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020 ; Across the world, nationalism and populism are on the rise and wrap up debates about immigration, human rights, refugees and moral responsibility. Whilst nationalism ascertains who is in and out of a community, populism relies on the emotional appeal that common people need to overcome the disinterested and corrupted elite. What is particularly disturbing is the tendency for nationalist and populist policies to introduce legislation that infringes human rights and curbs the independence of the judiciary and democratic institutions, pillars of the rule of law. In this regard, dystopian speculative fiction warns readers about the possible outcomes of the present world by extrapolating key features of populist right-wing rhetoric. In this article I examine two recent novels by Portuguese writers António Ladeira and Nuno Gomes Garcia to show how they operate within what Tom Moylan defined as a critical dystopian narrative. I argue that António Ladeira's Montanha Distante (2020) and Nuno Gomes Garcia's Zalatune (2020) experiment the radical limits of the political and social practices of populist policies, showing their devastating result on the individual and his or her sense of community. I also contend that these dystopias offer a glimmer of hope by returning to the basic concept of empathy, the cornerstone of cohesive communities, able to face down the corrosive effect of cold and calculating populist policies. ; publishersversion ; published

Post-colonial Portuguese literature published since 1974 has obscured the trauma of the colonised. In the context of Portuguese prose fiction published since the beginning of the second decade of the present millennium, authors of African descent follow on from the generation that brought about the African liberations. However, due to the years of political and economic instability that followed in the former colonies, these writers became part of the African-heritage diaspora that has grown up in Portugal. As such, they form the visible face of the post-colonial cultural entanglement that was produced by colonialism. Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida, the author of As Telefones (The Telephones, 2020), the novel that is the focus of this article, provides an example of African-heritage writing and lived experience that has points of reference in Portuguese and Angolan cultures alike. This article argues that Portuguese prose fiction by authors of African descent destabilises cartographical imaginaries to reflect on the cultural complexity of the lived experience of people of African descent, contributing to a polyphony that has been absent from collective memory in the public space, and consequently creating possibilities for historical reparation. This article maintains that, on the one hand, As Telefones decolonises the experience of loss that literature published after 1974 has associated not only with the memory and experience of the coloniser's body, but also and significantly, with the feeling of saudade (nostalgia or longing) that is so central to Portuguese culture; on the other, it argues that the narrative focus on the telephone as the sole means of transmission of post-memory introduces a rupture in Portuguese literary convention — in which writing is a privileged witness — by endorsing the orality that feeds into the origins of African literatures. ; A literatura pós-colonial portuguesa publicada depois de 1974 deixou na obscuridade o trauma do colonizado. Abstract
This article examines the poetic use of the revolution in four songs written and played by the Portuguese rapper Sam the Kid, the bands The Soaked Lamb, Os Quais, and The Loafing Heroes. Despite these songs showing aesthetic and formal differences, the revolution is a common trope to discuss the post-revolutionary nation. The Portuguese singers did not experience the revolution because they were born in the 1970s. A close analysis of these compositions suggests that the revolution is part of the collective imaginary and stands as the moment utopia could have been made real in Portugal. In times of crisis, the revolution emerges as the impetus to change and 1974 becomes the Portuguese appropriation of utopia in the twenty-first century. Rap, bossa nova, indie and roots emerge as legitimate musical genres to discuss postmodern times and the post-revolutionary nation. In 'Abstenção' ('Abstention') (released by Sam the Kid in 2006) and in 'Palhaços' ('Clowns') (released by The Soaked Lamb in 2012), the present is gloomy and the memory of the Carnation Revolution is appropriated to give voice to the dispossessed of the Portuguese democracy and offered to make amends with the memory of the failed revolutionary solutions. 'Meu Caro Amigo Chico' ('My Dear Friend Chico') (released by Os Quais in 2012) and 'The Shepherd' (released by The Loafing Heroes in 2014) are compositions where the crisis of utopia is redeemed to reconfigure the conceptual limits of individualism and the body, an extension of the world, becomes the unchartered territory of utopia.

UID/HIS/04666/2013 ; In the early 2010s, most Portuguese had to manage to keep their heads above the waters of a serious financial crisis, aggravated by the austerity measures imposed by the Troika in 2011. The Troika representatives left Portugal in 2014, after the bailout agreement had formally finished. There was a new horizon of economic prosperity, with prospects of improvement in the standards of living of the Portuguese. In the meantime, Portugal celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. O verdadeiro ator (2011) and O Coro dos Defuntos (2015) are two novels whose narratives use fantasy to represent the persistence of the late years of the New State and the Carnation Revolution as phantasmagoria in the collective memory. These narratives confirm that the legacy of the post-revolutionary discourse (Cardoso Pires and Lídia Jorge, among others) can shed light on the political, social and cultural tensions experienced in the 2010s, re-defining the Portuguese as the metaphor of the collectively-driven subject to overcome conflict. Ultimately, the memory of the Revolution in the 21st century shows that these are melancholic times, burdened by the lack of utopia, aggravated by the tensions between depoliticized collective memory policies and efforts to ignite hope to reverse melancholia. ; authorsversion ; published
