After centuries of being torn apart by conflicts that remain deeply embedded in the European collective memory, Europe's most recent history is being written as a narrative of redemption. In order to establish itself as a political, economic and social entity, Europe has been emphasizing its common cultural roots and historical features of unity. For this purpose, narratives of identity have been produced in the context of European and national institutions that seek to replace fractures by pluralisation and forgetfulness by redemption. However, the codification of European culture and identity has turned out to be an extremely difficult task: the conceptual devices for theorizing Europe as a social unity and cultural identity are insufficient and unsuitable. In addition, the conceptualization of identity tends to be primarily related to notions such as belonging, memory and continuity rather than to the idea of an in-progress project taking place in the present and in the future. Recent theoretical approaches reveal how European identity narratives require hybrid multilayered configurations in order to accommodate national, ethnic and cultural features, as well as post-national political and economic unification. This paper attempts to explore some processes of identity construction in an European context and to discuss how elements that embody the ambiguity that runs through European culture - unity and diversity, commemoration and forgetfulness - are registered in the social ...

; Science has made important strides in the debate about gender relations, although a non-level playing field between men and women is still evident, which leads to different choices and motivations with regard to academic and scientific careers. The internationalisation of education has led to new challenges for women, especially as regards the role they play in the political strategies adopted in the backdrop of the globalisation of education. Among these strategies is a drive to increase international mobility within academia by encouraging students and researchers to go to research centres abroad. The Brazilian Science and Technology system has been increasing investment in this sector, granting research scholarships for several degree levels. But what share of these scholarships is attributed to females and what significance is attached to this mobility? Based on a survey of 52 Brazilian women enrolled on post-graduate courses at the Universidade do Minho, this study aims to draw up the profile of these students and researchers, mapping their personal, social, cultural, and academic characteristics, as well as the underlying motivations behind their choice for this mobility.

Verbs of movement reflect our identity's common denominator, such as to leave, to exit, to emigrate, to seek, to go in search. So much has been said of our situatedly Portuguese modernity that, in order to be great, we must wander outside our own dreams. We returned from our colonial and colonising saga with our mind and imagination already filled with imaginary baggage, of other centres, other 'discoveries' to be narrated. The Portuguese postcoloniality, although very anchored in the rhetoric of imperial nostalgia, restores, in a watchful gaze, these new movements and identity 'pilgrimages'. This paper seeks to develop a critical reading of the novel by Dulce Maria Cardoso, O Retorno (The Return), to critically reflect on the prefix 'post' in our recently conquered postcoloniality. It also seeks to incorporate a reflection on Portugal's place in the historic encounter with modernity and the centrality that resulted from 'docking' with Europe, denouncing the ambivalence and the exotopy with which the country represents and defines itself. At stake are the identity meanings produced in a context of sudden political and cultural transitions, which reveal a historical ballast comprising imperial imaginations and the lessening of the country within Europe and on the road of modernity. Between the return of imaginary empires and the illusions of new routes to old centres, the country renews its eternal cycle of returns and departures, symbolically digesting its losses in a process of identity ...

In work environments, the main aim of occupational safety risk assessment (OSRA) is to improve the safety level of an installation or site by either preventing accidents and injuries or minimizing their consequences. To this end, it is of paramount importance to identify all sources of hazards and assess their potential to cause problems in the respective context. If the OSRA process is inadequate and/or not applied effectively, it results in an ineffective safety prevention program and inefficient use of resources. An appropriate OSRA is an essential component of the occupational safety risk management process in industries. In this article, we performed a survey to elicit the relative importance for identified OSRA tasks to enable an in‐depth evaluation of the quality of risk assessments related to occupational safety aspects on industrial sites. The survey involved defining a questionnaire with the most important elements (tasks) for OSRA quality assessment, which was then presented to safety experts in the mining, electrical power production, transportation, and petrochemical industries. With this work, we expect to contribute to the main question of OSRA in industries: "What constitutes a good occupational safety risk assessment?" The results obtained from the questionnaire showed that experts agree with the proposed OSRA process decomposition in steps and tasks (taxonomy) and also with the importance of assigning weights to obtain knowledge about OSRA task relevance. The knowledge gained will enable us, in the near future, to build a framework to evaluate OSRA quality for industrial sites.
