CMS Collaboration: et al. ; A measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa coupling to the top quark is presented using proton-proton collision data at √s=13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1, recorded with the CMS detector. The coupling strength with respect to the standard model value, Yt, is determined from kinematic distributions in t¯t final states containing ee, μμ, or eμ pairs. Variations of the Yukawa coupling strength lead to modified distributions for t¯t production. In particular, the distributions of the mass of the t¯t system and the rapidity difference of the top quark and antiquark are sensitive to the value of Yt. CMS Collaboration: et al. ; The ratios of the Bc(2S)+ to B+c, B∗c(2S)+ to B+c, and B∗c(2S)+ to Bc(2S)+ production cross sections are measured in proton-proton collisions at √s=13TeV, using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 143 fb−1. The three measurements are made in the B+c meson phase space region defined by the transverse momentum pT>15 GeV and absolute rapidity |y|<2.4, with the excited B(*)c(2S)+ states reconstructed through the B(*)+cπ+π−, followed by the B+c→J/ψπ+ and J/ψ→μ+μ− decays. The Bc(2S)+ to B+c, B∗c(2S)+ to B+c, and B∗c(2S)+ to Bc(2S)+ cross section ratios, including the unknown B(*)c(2S)+→B(*)+cπ+π− branching fractions, are (3.47±0.63(stat)±0.33(syst))%, (4.69±0.71(stat)±0.56(syst))%, and 1.35±0.32(stat)±0.09(syst), respectively. None of these ratios shows a significant dependence on the pT or |y| of the B+c meson. CMS Collaboration: et al. ; A search is described for the production of a pair of bottom-type vectorlike quarks (VLQs), each decaying into a b or ¯b quark and either a Higgs or a Z boson, with a mass greater than 1000 GeV. The analysis is based on data from proton-proton collisions at a 13 TeV center-of-mass energy recorded at the CERN LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1. As the predominant decay modes of the Higgs and Z bosons are to a pair of quarks, the analysis focuses on final states consisting of jets resulting from the six quarks produced in the events. Since the two jets produced in the decay of a highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs or Z boson can merge to form a single jet, nine independent analyses are performed, categorized by the number of observed jets and the reconstructed event mode. No signal in excess of the expected background is observed. Lower limits are set on the VLQ mass at 95% confidence level equal to 1570 GeV in the case where the VLQ decays exclusively to a b quark and a Higgs boson, 1390 GeV for when it decays exclusively to a b quark and a Z boson, and 1450 GeV for when it decays equally in these two modes. CMS Collaboration: et al. ; A search is conducted for a low-mass charged Higgs boson produced in a top quark decay and subsequently decaying into a charm and a strange quark. The data sample was recorded in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1. The search is performed in the process of top quark pair production, where one top quark decays to a bottom quark and a charged Higgs boson and the other to a bottom quark and a W boson. With the W boson decaying to a charged lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino, the final state comprises an isolated lepton, missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets, of which two are tagged as b jets. To enhance the search sensitivity, one of the jets originating from the charged Higgs boson is required to satisfy a charm tagging selection. No significant excess beyond standard model predictions is found in the dijet invariant mass distribution. The ATLAS collaboration and the CMS collaboration: et al. ; The combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb−1 for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (F0), left-handed (FL), or right-handed (FR) polarizations. The resulting combined measurements of the polarization fractions are F0 = 0.693 ± 0.014 and FL = 0.315 ± 0.011. The fraction FR is calculated from the unitarity constraint to be FR = −0.008 ± 0.007. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and represent an improvement in precision of 25 (29)% for F0 (FL) with respect to the most precise single measurement. A limit on anomalous right-handed vector (VR), and left- and right-handed tensor (gL, gR) tWb couplings is set while fixing all others to their standard model values. The allowed regions are [−0.11, 0.16] for VR, [−0.08, 0.05] for gL, and [−0.04, 0.02] for gR, at 95% confidence level. The CMS Collaboration: et al. ; The first direct, model-independent measurement is presented of the modulus of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements |Vtb|, |Vtd|, and |Vts|, in final states enriched in single top quark t-channel events. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data from the LHC, collected during 2016 by the CMS experiment, at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. Processes directly sensitive to these matrix elements are considered at both the production and decay vertices of the top quark. In the standard model hypothesis of CKM unitarity, a lower limit of |Vtb| >0.970 is measured at the 95% confidence level. The CMS Collaboration: et al. ; Measurements of production cross sections of WZ and same-sign WW boson pairs in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV at the LHC are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1, collected with the CMS detector during 2016–2018. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes W±Z→ ±ν ′± ′∓and W±W±→ ±ν ′±ν, where , ′=e, μ. Differential fiducial cross sections as functions of the invariant masses of the jet and charged lepton pairs, as well as of the leading-lepton transverse momentum, are measured for W±W±production and are consistent with the standard model predictions. The dependence of differential cross sections on the invariant mass of the jet pair is also measured for WZ production. An observation of electroweak production of WZ boson pairs is reported with an observed (expected) significance of 6.8 (5.3) standard deviations. The CMS Collaboration: et al. ; The fiducial cross section for Y(1S)pair production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in the region where both Y(1S)mesons have an absolute rapidity below 2.0 is measured to be 79 ±11 (stat)±6 (syst)±3 (B)pb assuming the mesons are produced unpolarized. The last uncertainty corresponds to the uncertainty in the Y(1S)meson dimuon branching fraction. The measurement is performed in the final state with four muons using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. This process serves as a standard model reference in a search for narrow resonances decaying to Y(1S)μ+μ−in the same final state. Such a resonance could indicate the existence of a tetraquark that is a bound state of two bquarks and two ̄bantiquarks. The tetraquark search is performed for masses in the vicinity of four times the bottom quark mass, between 17.5 and 19.5 GeV, while a generic search for other resonances is performed for masses between 16.5 and 27 GeV. No significant excess of events compatible with a narrow resonance is observed in the data. The CMS collaboration: et al. ; The ratios of the production cross sections between the excited ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons and the ϒ(1S) ground state, detected via their decay into two muons, are studied as a function of the number of charged particles in the event. The data are from proton-proton collisions at s√ = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb−1, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Evidence of a decrease in these ratios as a function of the particle multiplicity is observed, more pronounced at low transverse momentum pμμT. For ϒ(nS) mesons with pμμT > 7 GeV, where most of the data were collected, the correlation with multiplicity is studied as a function of the underlying event transverse sphericity and the number of particles in a cone around the ϒ(nS) direction. The ratios are found to be multiplicity independent for jet-like events. The CMS Collaboration: et al. ; A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel is presented. This analysis is based on 35.9 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected during the 2016 LHC running period, with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. A refined detector calibration and new analysis techniques have been used to improve the precision of this measurement. The Higgs boson mass is measured to be mH= 125.78 ± 0.26 GeV. This is combined with a measurement of mH already performed in the H → ZZ → 4ℓ decay channel using the same data set, giving mH= 125.46 ± 0.16 GeV. This result, when further combined with an earlier measurement of mH using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the CMS detector, gives a value for the Higgs boson mass of mH= 125.38 ± 0.14 GeV. The CMS collaboration: et al. ; A search for standard model Higgs bosons (H) produced with transverse momentum (pT) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs (bb¯¯¯) is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at s√ = 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. The search is inclusive in the Higgs boson production mode. Highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs bosons decaying to bb¯¯¯ are reconstructed as single large-radius jets, and are identified using jet substructure and a dedicated b tagging technique based on a deep neural network. The method is validated with Z → bb¯¯¯ decays. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, an excess of events above the background assuming no Higgs boson production is observed with a local significance of 2.5 standard deviations (σ), while the expectation is 0.7. The corresponding signal strength and local significance with respect to the standard model expectation are μH = 3.7 ± 1.2(stat)+0.8−0.7(syst)+0.8−0.5(theo) and 1.9 σ. The CMS collaboration: et al. ; The momentum-weighted sum of the electric charges of particles inside a jet, known as jet charge, is sensitive to the electric charge of the particle initiating the parton shower. This paper presents jet charge distributions in sNN−−−√ = 5.02 TeV lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. These data correspond to integrated luminosities of 404 μb−1 and 27.4 pb−1 for PbPb and pp collisions, respectively. Leveraging the sensitivity of the jet charge to fundamental differences in the electric charges of quarks and gluons, the jet charge distributions from simulated events are used as templates to extract the quark- and gluon-like jet fractions from data. The modification of these jet fractions is examined by comparing pp and PbPb data as a function of the overlap of the colliding Pb nuclei (centrality). This measurement tests the color charge dependence of jet energy loss due to interactions with the quark-gluon plasma. CMS Collaboration: et al. ; Using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2018, the Bs0→X(3872)φ decay is observed. Decays into J/ψ+π- and K+K- are used to reconstruct, respectively, the X(3872) and φ. The ratio of the product of branching fractions B[Bs0→X(3872)φ]B[X(3872)→J/ψ+π-] to the product B[Bs0→(2S)φ]B[ψ(2S)→J/ψ+π-] is measured to be [2.21±0.29(stat)±0.17(syst)]%. The ratio B[Bs0→X(3872)φ]/B[B0→X(3872)K0] is found to be consistent with one, while the ratio B[Bs0→X(3872)φ]/B[B+→X(3872)K+] is two times smaller. This suggests a difference in the production dynamics of the X(3872) in B0 and Bs0 meson decays compared to B+. The CMS collaboration: et al. ; At the start of Run 2 in 2015, the LHC delivered proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13\TeV. During Run 2 (years 2015–2018) the LHC eventually reached a luminosity of 2.1× 1034 cm-2s-1, almost three times that reached during Run 1 (2009–2013) and a factor of two larger than the LHC design value, leading to events with up to a mean of about 50 simultaneous inelastic proton-proton collisions per bunch crossing (pileup). The CMS Level-1 trigger was upgraded prior to 2016 to improve the selection of physics events in the challenging conditions posed by the second run of the LHC. This paper describes the performance of the CMS Level-1 trigger upgrade during the data taking period of 2016–2018. The upgraded trigger implements pattern recognition and boosted decision tree regression techniques for muon reconstruction, includes pileup subtraction for jets and energy sums, and incorporates pileup-dependent isolation requirements for electrons and tau leptons. In addition, the new trigger calculates high-level quantities such as the invariant mass of pairs of reconstructed particles. CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration: et al. ; A template fitting technique for reconstructing the amplitude of signals produced by the lead tungstate crystals of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter is described. This novel approach is designed to suppress the contribution to the signal of the increased number of out-of-time interactions per beam crossing following the reduction of the accelerator bunch spacing from 50 to 25 ns at the start of Run 2 of the LHC. Execution of the algorithm is sufficiently fast for it to be employed in the CMS high-level trigger. It is also used in the offline event reconstruction.
