There is a growing view in the historiography of Australia s war in Vietnam that 1 Australian Task Force (1ATF) succeeded in defeating the Communist insurgency within Phuoc Tuy, the province in which the Task Force was based, by time it withdrew from Vietnam at the end of 1971. This belief comes against a backdrop of a historiography of pacification that is dominated by works looking to win doctrinal battles within the US military. By examining the conduct of pacification in Phuoc Tuy between 1966 and 1972, this thesis challenges both these perspectives. A detailed case study of a single province puts both the operations of 1ATF in a wider context, and allows pacification to be examined on its own terms rather than through the prism of contemporary counterinsurgency. By focusing on a single province, this thesis is also able to examine the political, economic and military aspects of pacification and how they influenced one another, rather than focusing on a single program or aspect. By taking this view, this thesis is able to examine how successful pacification was in Phuoc Tuy. Despite a flawed conception and frequent mismanagement, pacification did begin to change Phuoc Tuy s political and economic structure and succeeded in eroding the power of the Communist insurgency. Yet ultimately pacification could not overcome the weaknesses inherent in the South Vietnamese government. Equally while 1ATF achieved some success in operations in Phuoc Tuy, it did not have the ability to solve the political problems underpinning the insurgency. Although it was weakened, the Communist insurgency survived. Pacification did not succeed in Phuoc Tuy.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (United Nations, 1989) enshrined the rights of children and young people to participate in decisions affecting their lives. This Convention has impacted on national legislation and policy (UNICEF, 2009) and influenced the development of appropriate methodologies for listening to children (Hill, 2006). This presentation will outline a case study of nine college students with additional support needs (ASN). The aim was to understand their recent lived experiences of transition planning and preparation. Visual resources in the form of a 'discussion poster' were developed to support the interviews with the young people both as a stimulus and as a recording method. Interviews were video-recorded using an iPad and photographs were taken of the completed posters. Inductive thematic analysis was utilised (Black & Ubbes, 2009). All the young people reported a positive transition experience; and the majority recalled being involved in some form of transition planning and preparation (e.g. meetings, college visits, part-time college attendance), although they appear to have been aware of limited post-school options. Finally, the presentation will consider the use of visual and other creative methodologies to inform and support post-school transition practices. Black, J., & Ubbes, V. (2009). Privatization has been a key element of structural reform in many developing and transition economies during the last decade. This paper examines the fiscal and macroeconomic issues involved in the privatization of nonfinancial public enterprises in these economies. It considers issues such as the factors determining the proceeds from privatization and the amount accruing to the budget, the uses of proceeds, the impact of privatization on the budget and macroeconomic aggregates, and the privatization component of IMF-supported programs. The empirical evidence draws on case study countries that reflect geographical diversity and are representative of a range of privatization experience in developing and transition economies
