"The number of older war veterans receiving disability benefits is steadily growing and is predicted to rise in the next decade. This book provides comprehensive knowledge about health and psychosocial concerns of veterans aging with disabilities and unmet needs and compares policy in three countries that have been involved in massive warfare in the 20th century--the United Kingdom, the United States, and Israel. Using a cross-national comparative study of the policies, legislation and services provided by these three countries, which have significant numbers of aging disabled military veterans, this book provides evidence-based knowledge on the trajectories and attendant mental-health and psychosocial problems this sub-group faces when aging with a disability. It sheds light on the paradox in which most veterans with disabilities in the UK, USA and Israel are older, while the current legislation and budget target younger veterans with disabilities. The book reflects the current debate regarding the desired policy toward older veterans with disabilities in these countries and whether to provide them with proactive health services prior to retirement to prevent "accelerated aging." It also evaluates the dilemma of whether to serve aging veterans separately as a unique population or to provide them with the same services used by the general population. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the roots of institutionalization, deinstitutionalization legislation and policies of the twentieth century, and twenty-first-century efforts to promote community living policies domestically and internationally, particularly through the role of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), a landmark treaty adopted on 13 December 2006. Rimmerman shows that deinstitutionalization and community living cannot be examined only in terms of the number of institutions closed but also through the substantial change in values, legislation, and policies supporting personalization, as well as the social participation of people with disabilities. The book includes a significant exploration of United States legislation and important Supreme Court decisions compared with European policies toward community living. Finally it discusses the importance of Articles 12 and 19 of the convention and demonstrates the case of Israel that has used the convention as a road map for proposing a new community living policy

Social inclusion is often used interchangeably with the terms social cohesion, social integration and social participation, positioning social exclusion as the opposite. The latter is a contested term that refers to a wide range of phenomena and processes related to poverty and deprivation, but it is also used in relation to marginalised people and places. This book consists of two parts: the first aims to review the domestic and international historical roots and the conceptual base of disability, as well as the expressions of social exclusion of people with disabilities that interfere in their efforts to exercise their rights in society. It offers a comprehensive review of social and legal approaches to social exclusion and inclusion. The second part introduces and analyses domestic and international social and legal strategies to promote social inclusion for people with disabilities

AbstractThis article examines Muslim social workers' recommendations regarding child custody of parents with intellectual developmental disabilities and mental illness in Israel. Aside from the professional challenges of determining whether the parents are capable of being custodians, the article portrays and discusses the role of traditional norms in Muslim social workers' recommendations. The tension between professional and traditional norms and values is introduced and analysed in three different vignettes chosen from 14 Shari'a court rulings. The article concludes that Muslim social workers are aware of the traditional norms that prevail in their communities but tend to follow their professional values in their practice. The article sheds light on the importance of the family in the lives of people with disabilities in Arab society during the professional practice. The religious elements of a traditional society in the context of disabilities should be taken into account also.

Abstract
Arab society in Israel is undergoing modernisation and secularisation. However, its approach to disability and mental illness is still dominated by religious and traditional stereotypes, as well as folk remedies and community practices. The present study examines differences in Muslim social workers and Imams' recommendations in marriage/divorce and child custody cases of persons with intellectual disabilities (IDs) or mental illness. The study has two goals: (1) To examine differences in recommendations between Imams and Muslim social workers and (2) to explore variables related to their differential recommendations as observed in their responses to vignettes. Quantitative study using vignettes resembling existing Muslim religious (Sharia) court cases. Muslim social workers (138) and Imams (forty-eight) completed a background questionnaire, a religiosity questionnaire and a questionnaire that included twenty-five vignettes constructed by the researcher based on court rulings, adapted for the study. Muslim social workers tended to consider the religious recommendation when the family of person with ID or mental illness was portrayed in the vignette as religious. The same applied to Imams, albeit to a greater extent. The findings call for raising awareness amongst social workers and academics regarding the importance of religion and tradition in formulating professional recommendations.

This study of the quality of life of 135 visually impaired adults (aged 20–50) who were employed in extended-employment programs in Israel found that overall, the quality of life was associated with the participants' acceptance of their visual impairments and their years of seniority in the programs.

ABSTRACTThe study compared a group of 62 new Israeli fathers of pre‐term infants with a comparison group of 58 new fathers of full‐term infants with respect to parental stress, depression symptoms, mastery, self‐esteem and involvement with the child. Findings indicated that fathers of pre‐term infants had significantly greater stress and depression scores and lower involvement rate with the child compared with fathers of the matching group. No differences were found with respect to the fathers' mastery and self‐esteem. New fathers of full‐term infants, aged 30 years and more, had significantly higher self‐esteem compared with fathers aged less than 30 years. Findings are discussed with respect to practice in neonatal units.
