Through six articles written at intervals of about a decade between 1960 and 2020, this book provides an account of the author's developing political awareness during the period in the context of political events and changes. In this way the book illustrates the social origins of political attitudes, while, at the same time, the articles raise questions about the increasing dominance of political discourse in society. The book suggests that politics is now excessively managed by political professionals and that the challenge for reviving democratic participation is to restore the social dimension of state membership.

The book discusses relations between philosophy and empirical social sciences through detailed analyses of the work of Schutz, Gurwitsch and Merleau-Ponty, and then explores the development of Bourdieu's sociological reflexivity as his attempt to reconcile this intellectualist legacy with social research and political action.

The Anthem Companion to Pierre Bourdieu provides an introduction to the French sociologist's thought and an evaluation of the international significance of his work from a range of national perspectives. This volume assesses Bourdieu's work as a product of his social situation in France and, more importantly, in relation to his experience as French Algeria gained its independence. The companion then proceeds to ask how the concepts he developed can legitimately be applied to other situations

"French social and philosophical thought has played a very significant role in the development of European and American social theory. This detailed, timely book provides a map of the production and reception of French social thought within a global sociological context. Critically comparing the work of five key theorists Derek Robbins examines how their ideas were produced and received before persuasively setting out the key differences between their philosophical and ideological positions. The book sensitively traces the cross-currents of social theory and confidently leads the reader through the complex foundations of Western social thought. Each chapter represents a textual analysis of the production of a critical intellectual and focuses upon the work of: Althusser, Foucault, Aron, Lyotard, Bourdieu. This carefully crafted volume represents a significant contribution to the globalization of theory and will be essential reading for anyone interested in Western social theory and the foundations of sociological thought."--Publisher's website
