Survey Organization Differences in Estimating Public Participation in the Arts

Estimates of arts & recreational participation from the 1982 & 1985 surveys conducted for the National Endowment for the Arts by the US Bureau of the Census (N = 17,254 & 13,675 respondents, respectively), & the Louis Harris & Associates' Mar 1984 survey (N = 1,504) are compared. Questions, samples, & techniques are examined & the effects of internal factors -- context, question time, frame, question wording, & data weighting -- & external factors -- sample frame & response rates -- are assessed. The discrepancy between the arts participation rate figures produced by the two survey organizations is explained by these factors. 6 Tables, 1 Appendix, 11 References. T. Francis
