This paper wants to present a Christian, who loved liberty, believed in it and worked to reach all through justice and respect for the law. This solves problems and conflicts, because it recognizes the other equal dignity and respect and given equal understanding and tolerance. Alcalá Zamora lived a free fraternal accomplice, partner of another. At home he learned to unite God and freedom. His family came from those liberals who looked at the others and were "benevolent and beneficent." The freedom worths more than the traditions and interests that oppose it. He wanted Christians to be nonprivileged citizens. He wanted the Church to feel protected by law, in the sign of freedom. "Homo homini res sacra". This sacredness of compassion inspired private and public ethics based on the simplicity of treatment and austerity. That was the trail left Alcala Zamora. He never tired of explaining the reasons for their rights. He did it even when others did not honor their word, as seen in the discussion of which was then Article 26 of the Constitution. His response was to resign.

It was clear the division of the Catholic Basques, with nationalists and those who believed that the parliamentary elections of February 1936 were the moment of truth face the threat of the revolutionary left. It studies the political consequences of the decision of the PNV to go alone to the polls and tension of those months. The expectations of harmony, sparked by the first message Azaña, sank to some measures of the Government and a string of facts that seemed to make way for the revolution, exceeding and violating the Constitution.

Informal representation given to Cardinal Gomá in December 1936, sending Ildebrando Antoniutti as apostolic delegate in humanitarian mission in July, remained at its lowest level relations between the Holy See with the government of Franco. The situation changed in 1937. The nuncio Gaetano Cicognani did not arrive until June 1938. Discrete steps of a secret diplomacy advised in September 1937 to formalize the relationship, at its lowest. Antoniutti and Pablo de Churruca were named Responsible of Affairs, in Burgos, and to the Holy See, in a respective way. The collective letter of the bishops helped to improve the image of «national» Spain before the Catholics in other countries. The doctrinal position in which these facts were inserted was fixed at three encyclicals published in March 1937. They condemned the religious persecution of communism, nazism and the fear of a desire to runaway of the persecution forgiving people and fighting for justice for the working classes ; La representación oficiosa dada al cardenal Gomá en diciembre de 1936, el envío Ildebrando Antoniutti como delegado apostólico en julio en misión humanitaria, mantuvieron bajo mínimos las relaciones de la Santa Sede con el Gobierno de Franco.

Free of the pressure of legitimist positions, first confessional and then lay according to the model of Action Française, the Catholics inaugurate in the first third of the XXth century a form of new presence. That was demanding a new organization: a party that was creating electorate, not electoral offices. The elector had to become a citizen able of understanding the social, economic and political situations, to declare itself on them. This task was a part of the moral education in a democratic society. It was, at the same time, an option so that the Church was never leaving the freedom reached on having become independent of the power and on having recognized the political freedom of the Catholics. [EN] Political reforms and military pacification in Cuba: After a year of war in Cuba, the permanence of Spain in the island depended on the success of the military campaign and of the acceptance of political reforms. They were the two arguments needed to gain the benevolence of the European powers and the neutrality of the United States. A stable and fair peace had to be made. The supporters of independence had to be defeated and a response made to the just aspirations of the Cubans. In these months of 1897, negotiations were subject to military requirements. When these were subordinated to the political project the liberal party, autonomy had no time to take hoid. Four month after it was introduced the war between Spain and the United States broke outs. ; Peer reviewed
