IntroductionAustralians have a high incidence of Colorectal cancer (CRC) and it is the second leading cause of cancer death. CRC patients experience more comorbid conditions such as diabetes and heart diseases than expected from population norms. It is anticipated that older patients with CRC will have even more comorbidities.
ApproachData from South Australia Cancer Registry were linked with hospital inpatient separations (public and private) and Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme data to acquire a detailed dataset of CRC patients in South Australia. We have investigated the prevalence of different comorbidities by age and subsite (colon vs rectal) in the 12 months period prior to CRC diagnosis using the chronic comorbid conditions used by Charlson and RX-risk indices.
ResultsOf 11,656 CRCs diagnosed in 2003-2013, a significant higher prevalence of comorbidity presented in colon than rectal cancer patients using either indices. The most prevalent comorbidities for colon and rectal cancers respectively were: hypertension (25.9%, 22.0%), diabetes (17.3%, 15.6%) and gastric disease (11.4%, 12.4%). Common medications for colon and rectal cancers respectively were: hyperlipidaemia (38.4%, 33.7%), hypertension (38.0%, 31.7%) and gastroesophageal reflux diseases (36.2%, 26.8%). In younger patients (<50 years) with colon and rectal cancer anaemia (9.1%) and diabetes (7.4%) were the most prevalent comorbidities and gastroesophageal reflux medications (17.1%) and opioids (14.5%) were used most frequently whereas, in older patients (>79 years) hypertension (36.7%, 32.7%) was the most prevalent comorbid condition and hypertensive drugs (52.23%, 51,72%)were the most frequently used medication respectively.
ConclusionAlthough often regarded as a single disease (CRC), colon and rectal cancers have different predisposing factors and clinical features. As expected, older patients have a higher prevalence of comorbid chronic diseases. We observe, however, that colon and rectal cancer have different comorbidity patterns by age.

ObjectiveThe Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry for Australian and New Zealand (PCOR-ANZ) aims to monitor population-wide prostate cancer characteristics, treatments, and outcomes. However, long-term follow-up of secondary treatments, disease progression, and side effects is limited. This novel project provides increased utility, enhancing this clinical registry by integrating national and jurisdictional data.
ApproachThe Tasmanian and South Australian jurisdictional registries (PCOR-Tas and PCOR-SA) are being treated as pilots for this nationally relevant data linkage project. Each contains descriptive data on clinical characteristics, primary treatments, survival, and patient-reported outcomes for prostate cancer in their jurisdictions. Data linkages include state-based hospital patient records and central cancer registries, with additional linkages to national data on prescribed medicines, procedures, and deaths; refer Figure 1.
Authorisation by contributing custodians and ethics committees, and funding from the Movember charity, has enabled the more detailed evaluation of patient follow-up after the initial treatment to examine historical trends, health service utilisation, disparities and gaps, and long-term patient outcomes.
ResultsSouth Australian study cohort consists of all men in the SACR (South Australia's central cancer registry) who were diagnosed with prostate cancer [ICD10=C61] as well as any additional men recorded in the PCOR-SA diagnosed from January 2002 to June 2021 (n=25,000). Men who do not have SA addresses recorded in either source are excluded from the South Australian pilot. The Tasmanian cohort is younger (established 2015) and smaller (n=2080), but for comparison is linked with the equivalent local and national datasets
The South Australian data linkage is being undertaken by SA NT DataLink, with the Tasmanian linkage undertaken by the Tasmania Data linkage Unit. For both jurisdictions, the national datasets are being linked by the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW).
ConclusionSince the Australian health system involves components managed at both the State and Federal levels, multijurisdictional data linkage adds additional complexity to linkage projects. Undertaking this project was not without its challenges, but it demonstrates what can be achieved and the value of enhancing high-quality clinical registry data to address important outcomes in prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To assess public support for 10 potential policy initiatives to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption. DESIGN: A 2014 historical data set, which employed a face-to-face survey in one Australian state (study 1), provided the basis for comparison with our 2017 nationally representative, cross-sectional, computer-assisted telephone interviewing population survey (study 2). PARTICIPANTS: Study 1: South Australians, 15+ years (n=2732); study 2: Australians, 18+ years (n=3430). Primary outcome measures: levels of support for SSB-specific policy initiatives. For the 2017 national study (study 2), demographic characteristics, body mass index, knowledge of potential harms caused by consuming SSBs and SSB consumption were included in multivariable regression analyses. RESULTS: In 2017, all 10 potential policy initiatives received majority support (60%–88% either 'somewhat' or 'strongly' in favour). Initiatives with educative elements or focused on children received high support (>70%), with highest support observed for text warning labels on drink containers (88%) and government campaigns warning of adverse health effects (87%). Higher support was observed for SSB tax paired with using funds for obesity prevention (77%) than a stand-alone tax (60%). Support for policy initiatives was generally greater among those who believed SSB daily consumption could cause health problems in adults (4%–18% absolute difference) and/or in children (8%–26% absolute difference) and lower among SSB high consumers (7+ drinks per week; 9%–29% absolute difference). State-specific data comparison indicated increased support from 2014 to 2017 for taxation (42%vs55%; χ(2)=15.7, p<0.001) and graphic health warnings (52%vs68%; χ(2)=23.4. p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: There is strong public support for government action, particularly regulatory and educational interventions, to reduce SSB consumption, which appears to have increased since 2014. OBJECTIVES: Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is reported to be disproportionally high compared with the general Australian population. This review aimed to scope the literature documenting SSB consumption and interventions to reduce SSB consumption among Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Findings will inform strategies to address SSB consumption in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. METHODS: PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Informit, Joanna Briggs Institute EBP, Mura databases and grey literature were searched for articles published between January 1980 and June 2018. Studies were included if providing data specific to an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander population's SSB consumption or an intervention that focused on reducing SSB consumption in this population. DESIGN: Systematic scoping review. RESULTS: 59 articles were included (1846 screened). While reported SSB consumption was high, there were age-related and community-related differences observed in some studies. Most studies were conducted in remote or rural settings. Implementation of nutrition interventions that included an SSB component has built progressively in remote communities since the 1980s with a growing focus on community-driven, culturally sensitive approaches. More recent studies have focused exclusively on SSB consumption. Key SSB-related intervention elements included incentivising healthier options; reducing availability of less-healthy options; nutrition education; multifaceted or policy implementation (store nutrition or government policy). CONCLUSIONS: There was a relatively large number of studies reporting data on SSB consumption and/or sales, predominantly from remote and rural settings. During analysis it was subjectively clear that the more impactful studies were those which were community driven or involved extensive community consultation and collaboration.
