In Spain doctoral studies underwent a major legal reform in 1998. The new legislation has brought together the criteria, norms, rules, and study certificates in universities throughout the country, both public and private. A brief description is presented here of the planning and structuring of doctoral programs, which have two clearly differentiated periods: teaching and research. At the end of the 2-year teaching program, the individual and personal phase of preparing one's doctoral thesis commences. However, despite efforts by the state to regulate these studies and to achieve greater efficiency, critical judgment is in order as to whether the envisioned aims are being achieved, namely, that students successfully complete their doctoral studies. After this analysis, we make proposals for the future aimed mainly at the individual period during which the thesis is written, a critical phase in obtaining the doctor's degree. Not enough attention has been given to this in the existing legislation.
This study describes the personality characteristics of the failing university student at the University of Seville. One hundred and three students with a mean age of 21 years were evaluated using the 16 PF questionnaire. The personality profile was completed by application of the Survey of Interpersonal Values (SIV), including an intelligence evaluation using the WAIS scale of intelligence. The results support the majority of previous studies which relate certain personality traits to academic failure (Lathey, 1991; Weiss, Lotan, Kedar & Ben-Shakhar, 1988). Students who are failing in their courses scored significantly higher in neurosis and extraversion than did their population group. The data encourage consideration of the existence of other personality traits which limit academic success; among these are psychoticism, poor leadership, strong nonconformity and low generosity. The final discussion points up the need to introduce more precise lines of investigation and the formulation of new working hypotheses.
The perception of the university lecturer/teacher role from the students' perspective was analyzed. A sample of 1,599 social sciences university students responded to an open question about the most relevant characteristics that their ideal teacher/lecturer should have. The chi-square test performed showed that students' preferred features of the teacher/lecturer role were associated with their mutual interaction (e.g., having respectful manners, being understanding and open) as well as having the ability to clearly transmit information. Understanding students' expectations of their professors is essential in order to improve the professor-student relationship, and can also assist professors in developing their roles.

; The incorporation from the greater ones to the Universities is a movement more and more supported by the university institutions of all the developed countries. This indicates the sensitivity that the University is expressing towards one of the most unprotected sectors of the population. In addition, the Universities with their support, are breaking, from a democratic vision, tolerant and flexible, with the traditional conditions of access to the standardized courses proposed by the own titles of the Spanish universities. This situation is fruit of the new philosophy of the Universities to open its doors to the greater people, which denotes a sensitivity of the University with the greater ones, wanting to thank for that service with a cultural benefit and a recognition to those who could not accede to university studies, thus resulting in a promotion of the psychosocial factors.

; The incorporation of the elder to the Universities is a movement more and more supported by the universities of all the developed countries.
