Depoliticization of Indonesia's Political Parties: Attaining Military Stability
In: Armed forces & society, Volume 14, Issue 2, p. 247-272
ISSN: 1556-0848
This article examines the politicization of the Indonesian military between 1945 and 1966 and its subsequent depoliticization of the nation's political parties. Examined also are the ways in which the military-dominated government has (1) interfered in the election of party leaders, (2) formed a government-backed party to contest elections, (3) consolidated the opposition parties into two dissension-ridden groups, (4) banned partisan activity at the local level, (5) staged symbolic national elections, and (6) compelled parties to adopt the national ideology as their sole organizing principle. Indonesia's experiences suggest that military-dominated regimes in modernizing societies can temporarily enhance political stability by emasculating political parties during periods of rapid economic growth. But it demonstrates also that long-term stability necessitates the creation of a mass party or movement outside the military's organizational structure that can mobilize genuine popular support.

Changing patterns of political involvement among Malay village women
In: Asian survey: a bimonthly review of contemporary Asian affairs, Volume 26, Issue 3, p. 322-344
ISSN: 0004-4687
Analysis of the changing pattern of political involvement among Malay women in the village of Sungai Raya in northwestern Johore. Continuity and change in the women's political awareness, concern and participation. It is argued that, although marginal involvement has increased during the past two decades, most women remain politically uninformed and unconcerned. The study contends that the village Wanita UMNO (women's section of the United Malays National Organization) organization is weak and politically insignificant. (DÜI-Sen)

Political involvement and political stability in rural Malaysia

This longitudinal study, combining surveys and interviews analyzes the changing pattern of involvement in the rural Malay community of Sungai Raya in northwestern Johore. It describes politicizing developments in the village between 1966 and 1978 and examines the continuity and change in the Malays' political awareness, concern about politics, political participation, and political opinions. The study concludes that rural development projects have raised the Malays' standard of living and heightened support for the dominant Malay party, that political participation has been increased without expanding the number of villages whose opinions and expectations must be considered by those in power, and that the level of discontent among the most politically active has been reduced.
