This paper seeks to analise the Spanish party system that was has been established and consolidated in the current democratic period, as well as to shed some light on the reasons behind the foreseeable good outcomes of Podemos and Ciudadanos in the coming legislative elections. Methodologically, the analysis relies on the combination of historical elements with electoral data and recently published polls that may be read as clues to a possible electoral tendency. This article aims to address how two specific national identities, Basque and Catalan enhanced by their nationalisms and by the Spanish democratization process were able to materialize politically and legally in what is qualified as "autonomies-nation". To get to the analysis of this case study we start to cover the role of the nation-State and the relationship between the concepts of State and nation. It specially highlights the emergence of new political units, which the author classifies as "autonomies-nation", which constitute a real challenge to the traditional concept of sovereignty, focusing the Spanish case.
