"What was a Family?": Politics and Sexuality in Colm Tóibín's The Heather Blazing
In: Moderna språk, Band 111, Heft 2, S. 62-77
ISSN: 2000-3560
Published in the context of the legal reformations and the public debates about the separation between Church and State in the early 1990s Ireland, Colm Tóibín's The Heather Blazing (1992) centers round the personal and professional life of Eamon Redmond, a conservative judge in a changing society. This essay will focus on an episode where a pregnant schoolgirl denounces her Catholic school authorities for their decision to expel her. My analysis will also draw on the unpublished version of the same episode, which features the actual case of Eileen Flynn, a teacher who was dismissed because she was an unmarried mother living with her baby's father, a married man himself. Significantly, whereas in the earlier version Tóibín engages with the issue of divorce, in the published text he further develops his criticism over society's punitive treatment of unmarried mothers. As will be argued, while exploring the tensions between the personal and the political, Tóibín offers in The Heather Blazing a subversive rewriting of the centrality of the Catholic family as a unit of social cohesion and control in Ireland. This essay will also situate Tóibín's novel through his journalism, as well as through an account of the shifting sexual, social and religious realities and pressures of twentieth century Ireland.

THE SPECIFICITY OF THE OBJECT IN THE SOCIOCULTURAL CONTINUUM
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 16, Heft 4, S. 571-587
ISSN: 0020-8701
A discussion of the advantages & limitations of disciplinary & interdisciplinary approaches in the soc sci's & humanities, followed by an examination of the relationship between forms of inquiry into the same group of phenomena, systematically or historically analyzed. Objectivity & subjectivity in the acquisition of knowledge re S-cul phenomena are dealt with. It is suggested that a panorama of interrelationships between objects traditionally classed separately by various disciplines might be outlined. Such a panorama, however, would be most revealing if it also took dynamic connections between objective & subjective categories into account. Treated, in order, are: (1) disciplinary scope, (2) the question of approaches, (3) specificity of the object, (4) relations between disciplines tending to systematization & historiology, (5) relationship between disciplines tending to historiographics but concerned with unlike domains or levels of S-cul life, & (6) formulation of a conceptual system. Purpose, scope, problems of the studies are lengthily discussed esp re objectivity. M. Farber.
Transnational evidence obtained by joint investigations teams in the European Union ; La obtencion de la prueba transfronteriza a través de los equipos conjuntos de investigación en la UE
The article is focused on identifying the problems that appear while using the Joint Investigation Teams (JIT) as a tool of obtaining transnational criminal evidence in the EU and, once detected, analyzing those problems, and other circumstances concerning JIT, in order to reach solid conclusions aimed to improve their effectiveness. The conclusions mentioned above can only be achieved by reaching a whole and clear vision of the utility of the JIT, as a way to obtain criminal evidence, and determining whether the results of their investigations have, or not, the suitable level of guarantee regarding their admissibility in a criminal procedure.

In: Foro internacional: revista trimestral, Band 48, Heft 3, S. 591-630
ISSN: 0185-013X
The theory of monetary union is analyzed in relation to a small, open economy closely linked to a larger, more stable one. In particular, from the perspective of Mexico, & in case it should decide to create a monetary union with the United States. This analysis is carried out in terms of economic & political feasibility, following the example of the European common currency (Euro), within the NAFTA framework. Additionally, the Canadian position on the subject is also discussed. Adapted from the source document.
La estrategia comercial mexicana. Superando la fuerza centripeta estadounidense?
In: Foro internacional: revista trimestral, Band 44, Heft 3, S. 392-429
ISSN: 0185-013X
After two decades of having started the liberalization process, the Mexican economy is one of the most open in the world. Mexico has achieved a high GDP liberalization coefficient; has cut down tariffs, & signed trade agreements with almost all developed countries & with various less industrialized nations, mainly in Latin America. NAFTA is Mexico's foremost agreement, as it encompasses more than 80% of its trade exchange, the substantial part of capital flows. NAFTA embraced negotiations in areas that had never been included in this kind of low-depth regional integration, such as investments, services, & intellectual property. Moreover, each new agreement signed by Mexico has been modeled after NAFTA. Thus, the North American agreement represents an ideal case for studying the impact of liberalization on economy, not just because its scope of liberalization, but because this agreement develops trade relations among countries having extreme disparities in terms of size & factors endowment. This Ricardian-style economic relations structure should yield the best profits of trade expansion in terms of income, employment, & productivity growth. This work considers negotiation processes of Mexican trade agreements, as well as their explicit & implicit goals, & it also evaluates the extent to which theoretical assumptions & goals have been achieved. Based on his findings, the authors suggest that there is a deep gap between expectations & realities. 4 Tables, 5 Graphs, 1 Appendix, 54 References. Adapted from the source document.
Moving Forward with ALMPs : Active Labor Policy and the Changing Nature of Labor Markets
Disruptive factors related to technology, market integration, and social and demographic change imply upcoming changes in the needs of the labor force. This study reviews the current approach to active labor market policies (ALMPs) globally and, based on the evidence and accounting for these factors, discusses desirable attributes for a resilient national active labor policy system, which covers universal access, tailored beneficiary service bundles, private sector linkages, using available technology, demand-driven skills training, measuring performance, social enterprises, and labor market demand side policy. Considering these attributes, we propose a public sector approach focused on supporting service providers rather than direct service provision. The approach revolves around: (i) Active Labor Policies (ALPs), referring to public expenditures on services aimed at improving the labor force's engagement in productive economic activity; (ii) Active Labor Policy Providers (ALPPs), referring to the entities that implement activities associated with ALPs; and (iii) the ALPP sector, referring to the set of existing ALPPs in a country. We also highlight potential actions by governments to transition into this model, such as contracting services out; service brokerage; service provider registries, accreditation, and incentives; integrated monitoring and evaluation systems; and aligning supply and demand side policy.
