"The revival of ideology, which began early in the second half of the last century, has led to reconsideration of the following questions: What underlies the pattern of the rise and decline of the ideological mode of thought? What leads young intellectuals to search for an ideology? What accounts for the changes in ideological fashion over time and nation, and shifts from one set of philosophical tenets to another? Who indeed are the ""intellectuals?""Studies of ideology have tended to range themselves for or against particular viewpoints, or have concerned themselves with defining perspectives. The purpose of this book is to examine the common causal patterns in the development of various differing ideologies. Feuer finds that any ideology may be said to be composed of three ingredients: The most basic and invariant is some form of Mosaic myth. In this Top Twenty Commentaries section of the Centennial Issues of the journal, the author reviews the highly cited article Short-Term Fluctuations in US Voting Behavior, 1896 - 1964(1971) by Gerald H. Kramer. A personal narrative traces the relationship between the authors as MIT undergraduate's interest in political science. The author's investigation of whether macroeconomic fluctuations had any effect on voting behavior represented a giant step in the methodology of formal models based on "bounded rationality" assumptions. The modeling issue of how to measure performance addressed observed short-term growth rate & an expected rate, & coattails effects. The correction of a data error is related to loss of predictive ability. The results of Kramer's theoretical interest in modeling the dynamics of interactions between the economy & the party system were questioned by survey researchers unable to replicate the findings. Kramer's defense rested on the different & more tenuous parameter of the time-series variations used by macro-modelers resulting in two seminal contributions to why we say "It's the economy, stupid.".
