This book investigates the working mechanisms of public opinion in Late Republican Rome as a part of informal politics. It explores the political interaction (and sometimes opposition) between the elite and the people through various means, such as rumours, gossip, political literature, popular verses and graffiti. It also proposes the existence of a public sphere in Late Republican Rome and analyses public opinion in that time as a system of control. By applying the spatial turn to politics, it becomes possible to study sociability and informal meetings where public opinion circulated. What emerges is a wider concept of the political participation of the people, not just restricted to voting or participating in the assemblies.

Roman senators preferred to meet in person to talk and discuss matters that concerned them; but when this was impossible, they used letters as a substitute. Given its importance and frequency of their use, senators were aware of a number of unwritten etiquette rules governing letter writing. These rules served to avoid unwanted conflicts or, in case of infraction, to be aware that they could lead to conflict. This article proposes a study of the etiquette of epistolary exchange between senators and members of the elite regarding political issues during Ciceronian times, drawing a novel parallel with informal political conversations. The article analyses how and whom should be contacted, the rules governing forwarding and reading of letters to others and the acceptable and inacceptable excuses for not having written. This study allows us to identify the unwritten rules and norms, which makes it possible to gauge the degree of tension that these could provoke. At the same time, it examines how senators tried to adhere to them in order to avoid political clashes with their peers. ; Los senadores romanos preferían encontrarse en persona para hablar y discutir sobre los temas que les atañían, pero, cuando esto resultaba imposible, empleaban el correo como sustituto. Este artículo analiza la naturaleza y extensión de los rumores y habladurías. Éstos permiten calibrar el grado de interés de las ciudades italianas y las provincias en la política romana. Siguiendo teorías antropológicas, queremos demostrar que las habladurías conformaban un importante aparato de control del individuo por los miembros de un grupo durante la República romana, especialmente en momentos de crisis, como muestra el caso de Cicerón y la guerra civil del 49-95 a.C. ; This article analyses the nature and extension of rumors and gossip, which allow gauging the degree of interest of Italian cities and provinces in Roman politics. Following anthropological theories, this article shall demonstrate that gossip constituted a key control device of the individual by the members of a group during the late Republic; this occurred especially in moments of crisis, such as the case of Cicero and the Civil War (49-45 BC) shows.

The work further evaluates the legal responses to and the public enforcement strategies concerning such activities, the high mobility of fortunes and unstable property-rights that resulted from one-off but also structural political, financial, economic and institutional crises that marked the history of the Roman Republic and Principate.
