EDGAR JAFFÉ E ELSE VON RICHTHOFEN À LUZ DE CARTAS RECÉM-DESCOBERTAS
In: Revista sociologia & antropologia, Band 1, Heft 1, S. 21-49
ISSN: 2238-3875
The Near-Death of Liberal Capitalism: Perceptions from the Weber to the Polanyi Brothers
In: Politics & society, Band 31, Heft 2, S. 263-282
ISSN: 1552-7514
Karl Polanyi and Max Weber held radically different views of liberal capitalism, but they also came to differ in significant respects with their brothers Michael Polanyi and Alfred Weber. The first section provides an overview of some critical moments in the history of liberal capitalism as perceived by some historical witnesses. The second treats the views of the Weber brothers on the world economy before 1914. The third deals with Max Weber's overlooked treatment of G. F. Knapp's once famous state theory of money. The fourth (re)turns to the circle of cosmopolitan Austro-Hungarian intellectuals who passionately debated the future of liberal capitalism and almost all of whom became political refugees.

Max Weber: family history, economic policy, exchange reform
In: Sociedade e estado, Band 17, Heft 1, S. 64-78
ISSN: 1980-5462
This article suggests that Weber's cosmopolitan dimension has much to do with his extended family history, which has been relatively neglected even though it influenced his world view and oeuvre in significant respects. It first sketches the cosmopolitan family context and then turns to Weber's political and scholarly agenda, especially the little-known story of his strong political and professional engagement in the battle over exchange reform in the eighteen-nineties.

Max Weber descended from Anglo-German merchant families with worldwide connections. This helped make him a "cosmopolitan nationalist." Fittingly, Weber at first tried to pursue a career in international commercial law. Family connections informed his understanding of South US wheat exports & North US railroad capitalism & of the tariff issues resulting therefrom. This, in turn, influenced his critique of the Prussian agrarian capitalists, especially of their opposition to trading in grain futures. Weber championed a strong capital market & efficient exchanges. His economic policies remain of exemplary interest insofar as they link the presumptive, if contested, national interest with an unsentimental acceptance of the world economy.

Max Weber at Home and in Japan: On the Troubled Genesis and Successful Reception of His Work

A review essay on books by (1) Max Weber, Briefe 1911-1912 ([Correspondence 1911-1912] Lepsius, M. Rainer, & Mommsen, Wolfgang J. (Eds), with Rudhard, Birgit, & Schoen, Manfred, in Max Weber Gesamtausgabe [Max Weber Complete Works], Tuebingen: J. C. B. Mohr, 1998); & (2) Wolfgang Schwentker, Max Weber in Japan. Eine Untersuchung zur Wirkungsgeschichte 1905-1995 (Tuebingen: Mohr Siebeck, 1998). These texts offer additional insight into the critical reception of Max Weber's writings. Max Weber's 1911/12 correspondence provides insight into problems he encountered while planning the Outline of Social Economics. Although the text delineates Weber's legal & professional problems as the products of his own doing, Weber's determination to combat feudalism, the state's authoritarian tactics, & media representations of his character is admired. Schwentker's text is praised for providing a historical overview of the reception of Marxist writings & the works of other German scholars in Japan during the 19th & early 20th centuries & for organizing all Japanese translations of Weber's writings. However, Schwentker's assertion that Japanese Weber translations continued during WWII is challenged. Also discussed are the achievements of Wolfgang Schluchter's edition of Max Weber Gesamtausgabe.
