George Eliot's relations with a wide circle of prominent, if sometimes marginal, thinkers & writers GB & the rest of Europe are examined. Her leading assumptions about human nature, contemporary affairs, motives, social & political reform, social stratification, & such institutions as marriage, family, community, & religion are discussed in relation to typologies of intellectual role & function. Conceptions & definitions of European intellectuals are briefly reviewed, focusing on models of the intellectual prevalent in GB. In her writings George Eliot exhibits some of the traits identified with continental intellectuals, & she shares qualities with a peculiarly English type known as "clerisy." However, her fundamental outlook & commitments are closer to the style of writer known as a "man of letters." Eighteenth century in origin, this type owes its survival into the nineteenth century to the nature of the English market for art & literature, & the cultural characteristics of the English provinces, with which George Eliot was inextricably connected. It is suggested that intellectuals have to be studied in their precise historical contexts even though it reduces the general applicability of sociological models. Modified AA
