The growth of the women's liberation movement is seen as inherently conflicting with the family unit. A history of the women's movement is traced through the development of the National Organization of Women (NOW). Initially NOW's focus was civil rights, but by 1971 it focused specifically on women-only issues such as abortion, educational equity, changes in marriage, divorce & rape laws, & lesbian rights. Especially with the issue of abortion, women's interests, family interests, & societal interests were coming into conflict. The debate over abortion provided a context for the emergence of the children's rights movement. Women's liberation results in the woman gaining independence & the child losing love & stability. The individual needs of women are also increasingly incompatible with a lifelong marital relationship. Family life is a zero-sum game, in which some interests must be sacrificed to others. Women's interests have traditionally been sacrificed, but this is no longer possible. P. Montgomery.

Health advocacy organizations (HAOs) are influential stakeholders in health policy. Although their advocacy tends to closely correspond with the pharmaceutical industry's marketing aims, the financial relationships between HAOs and the pharmaceutical industry have rarely been analyzed.
